10 Best Horror Movies with Humor

by Wednesday
(Texas, USA)

Okay, so we can all list horror movies and thrillers that are unintentionally funny, but the following movies blend humor with horror and thrills on purpose.

Whether it was one scene or the entire movie, they sure make for a popcorn night! I've included the best of those with dark humor (that I've seen). If I left some out, please enlighten me!

1) The Frighteners (1996): Drippy ghosts with a neurotic leading man, an eccentric FBI guy and girlfriend/dead boyfriend combo a la Starkweather. Crazy.

2) The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993): A seductive wife dressed in black, a somewhat maniacal husband, homicidal children, sociopathic family, friends, and servants - what else could any family and community ask for? Oh, don't let me forget the homage to Indians and a turkey dinner musical.

3) Vamp: What's better than two fraternity pledges going to a vampire joint to get their brothers a stripper, taking along a totally clueless Asian nerd because he has a car.

4) Tremors (1990): Nothing appeals to my Texas heart more than the couple bunkered down with serious guns and ammo in this monster attacks classic. P.S. Why is it everyone wants to run when that's the worst thing you can do?

5) Ghostbusters (1984): Been slimed lately? Enough said.

6) Cemetery Man: Dark humor abounds. Don't believe me? When's the last time you had sex on a grave site where the husband came through the ground to get at you? Or you fell in love with a head? Or motorcycle zombies attacked? See what I mean?

7) Fright Night: So your next-door neighbor is a vampire? SURE he is. (He also happens to eat apples, charms your mother and your girlfriend, and forgets to have a reflection.) Prove it, geek.

8) The Ruins: New Title: 'Americans in Mexico Torture a German'. (spoiler warning) One of the funniest scenes I've ever witnessed was the two women trying to hoist the poor, injured German out of the pit. Because of the sound effects people on this film, I've never laughed so hard. (Seriously, I and my cousin had tears and were rolling on the floor; no joke.)

9) Aliens: Thank God for the supporting cast since they supply much-needed humor in this incredibly suspenseful movie. Game over, man, game over!

10) Summer School (2006): Okay, okay. So it's not a horror movie. But who doesn't love Chainsaw and his buddy goring up the whole class to scare away a substitute?

Honorable Mentions: Tales From The Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, Pitch Black (2000), Gremlins (1984), Jurassic Park (1993), Scream, Fargo (1996).
