7 Down Lives Up to the Tag Line

When 7 Down’s DVD cover states ‘In the end Everyone Dies’ it ain’t kidding. Unfortunately, not much else happens.

The beginning of 7 Down includes a POV shot of someone lurking in the dark woods followed by a decidedly un-drug addict looking red head shooting up on her bathroom floor before crying. Next we find a couple having a fight in a restaurant that ends with the woman storming out proclaiming “it’s over!” followed by a drug dealer delivering his wares to a hooker in exchange for some honking on bobo. Finally we see a blonde 19 year old hottie sneaking into a bar and getting served by a drunken bartender who promptly gets fired for serving a minor. All this ties together ultimately as the drunk (now unemployed, but still drunk) bartender goes to meet some buddies the next day, met later by the jilted woman, and the drug addicted red head with her date, the drug dealer. A few more random characters add to the mix until the total is seven. 7 Down is the title of this film, so that sounds like a logical number.

The crew of seven gets into a car to drive someplace – but it is very important they get there before dark so the driver doesn’t get lost. Once they indeed get lost one of the characters mentions a legend of some people getting killed while stopped along a deserted country road such as the one they are on, followed by the car stopping on the side of the road so a man in a hoodie can run around and kill them all. Then the credits roll.

7 Down - Mike7 Down has some good and creative kill scenes, especially considering the obviously low budget. No set-up, suspense or rationale to any of those kill scenes, but good kill scenes. Other than that, I don’t know much. It is not clear who or what these characters are; except that I think the passenger in the car is the brother of the extremely bitchy jilted girlfriend. I’m not sure what they were doing or where they were going. I’m not certain who that killer is, how they happened upon the very spot where he was lurking, or why he killed them. After that, nothing else happens. Oh, the boyfriend left in the restaurant by the bitchy one is played by Director Tyler L. Schmid (whom I met at a convention in Nashville TN - nice guy) and the bitchy ex-girlfriend wore a dress made in the same fashion as one of my grandma’s afghans. Now, I don’t know anything more.

7 Down is the first film of fledgling production company “Bootsy Cox” (??) and I imagine it was a way to get some feet in the water toward a grand filmmaking ambition. Sounds great; I’m looking forward to the next offering having a plot.

1 1/2 Freakheads, out of 5
