I know this one!

The Love War (1970 TV movie)
starring Lloyd Bridges, Angie Dickinson, (Daniel J.) Dan Travanti, Pepper Martin (best-known as the trucker who beat up the powerless Clark Kent then got beaten up by re-powered Clark/Superman)
IMDb synopsis:
Two different alien races are at war. Representatives of each have landed on Earth to battle it out here, but they're being sneaky about it: They've taken human form and can spot other aliens only through the use of special glasses.

I recall how much people talked about this one when it aired then was rerun long, long ago. I haven't seen it for nearly 40 years, but I still remember it, including the final scene in which we are able to look through the glasses and see what the aliens look like for the first time (or so I seem to recall).

Do you think the special glasses inspired short story writer Ray Nelson and/or director/writer John Carpenter?

I was about to say the same thing. It sure sounds like They Live. Hope you find it.

Thanks, but it was older than that.

I saw it as a kid so it was early 70s or late 60s.

Kinda sounds like...

... They Live (1988)

Nada, a down-on-his-luck construction worker, discovers a pair of special sunglasses. Wearing them, he is able to see the world as it really is: people being bombarded by media and government with messages like "Stay Asleep", "No Imagination", "Submit to Authority". Even scarier is that he is able to see that some usually normal-looking people are in fact ugly aliens in charge of the massive campaign to keep humans subdued.

Hope that helps. Cheers!
