Thinking about watching Exorcist II on DVD? Don't.

Read this review of Exorcist II: The Heretic, look at the pictures and save yourself some grief by watching something else. Unless, of course, a 2 hour investment leading to a 5 minute payoff is your thing...

The Exorcist (1973 Directed by William Friedkin) is the best horror movie of all time (See 100 best horror movies list) Exorcist II follows the story of Regan MacNeil 4 years later, and she has a new demon!

Father Lamont (Richard Burton) travels to New York City to investigate two strange happenings: The death of Father Merrin (Max von Sydow, from the original Exorcist), and the apparent re-possession of Regan (Blair). Father Lamont's quest for truth then leads him across the globe to Africa in search of the super-demon Kokumo (James Earl Jones) who has insight as to the source of Regan's new demon, as well as this demons ability to travel via LOCUST. The story progresses as we learn that Regan had used a hypnosis machine (very much like the flashing light swirly thing used in Motel Hell ) which made her receptive to possession and brought on her new state of re-possession.

We then travel to the site of Regan's original possession from The Exorcist, Georgetown. Here Regan's new demon really gets annoying, possessing just about every character we've met so far. Luckily, the spirit of Father Merrin materializes to assist in the battle.

Exorcist II Regan with Locusts

There are a couple of cool scenes in this movie, including one where Father Lamont is scaling a treacherous cliff in Africa. Its fun when his climbing companions fall off the cliff and bounce off of the sides of the mountain as they plunge to their doom...

Regan's apartment in New York is very strange though. There is stainless steel everywhere, the balcony's railing has huge holes in it that would NEVER pass safety code and the aluminum bird cage apparently houses a feathered friend that cleans up after himself (it's completely spotless).

Exorcist II Sexy Linda Blair Overall the Exorcist II is disturbing, and not in a good way. Although we expect to be treated to a continuation of the original Exorcist, Exorcist II lacks the elements that made the original outstanding. I kept watching the movie thinking that something was going to happen. I waited...watched some more and waited some more. Then, a 5 minute wrap-up transpired and the credits rolled. I am still a little mad about it.

Richard Burton and Linda Blair are both terrible, too. Linda Blair as sex kitten? Well, not on my watch. And Richard Burton!? One of the greatest actors that ever lived is stumbling through this painful flick like a rank amateur.

I love Horror Movies and I LOVE The Exorcist - and I wish they would have left well enough alone. Wayne's rating: D. - Contact us about The Exorcist II!
