Over the years I’ve probably assembled a good seven or eight “Best of John Carpenter” lists. I suppose I really can’t help myself, as I’m a tremendous fan of the man’s work, and discussing one of the finest filmmakers of our time never seems to lose sheen. What’s interesting is, I’d bet that if you tracked down some of my past articles, every single list would differ slightly; I consider that a sign of brilliance (not on my part), because it’s obviously a difficult feat for me to choose my genuine favorites when I hold so many of John’s features in such high regard.

American Psycho director Mary Harron's The Moth Diaries will get a limited April 20th release date from IFC Films. There is no additional information available on a DVD or VOD release at this time. In the past IFC films have been showed in New York City, maybe they will place a few more theaters in this release.

The Moth Diaries stars Lily Cole, Scott Speedman, Sarah Gadon, Sarah Bolger.

In 2012 horror fans received a surprise gift with the popular ghost story Insidious. The movie did well at the box office and as we predicted last year there will be a sequel to the movie Insidious 2. With the picture’s reported $1.5 million budget, it has led to the film being called the most profitable film of 2011.

The horror movie will continue as the creative team behind the film announce plans for a sequel to Insidious. Leigh Whannell will once again write the script, and James Wan is in talks to once again direct.

The first official US poster for Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s (28 Weeks Later) upcoming chiller, Intruders has officially landed, and it’s an eerie little gem. While not exactly a revealing piece of work, the poster certainly sends a bit of shiver down the spine; if I’m going to look at Clive Owen, I prefer to look at a fully featured Clive Owen, the whole absent feature aspect is a tad unsettling.

The gripes of many horror movie fans as of late boil down to a few keys, some of which include: PG-13 horror, overuse of CGI, and remakes/prequels/sequels. However, while The Woman in Black IS actually a remake of a 1989 TV movie (both based in and of themselves on a 1983 novel of the same name), it’s the way that it overcomes those other stereotypical problems that make it a standout. Instead of building its hauntings on a computer, the filmmakers mostly let the atmosphere build tension itself to great effect. In addition, blood and gore do spill sparingly, but this film still gets under the skin by breaking a key rule of PG-13 (and general) horror: children aren’t supposed to die.

Unfortunately for this flight they are not alone and this flight is haunted.

However, Martin Scorsese’s brutal retelling of John MacDonald’s grim tale “The Executioners”, named for film as, Cape Fear 1991 manages to intensify the impact of J. Lee Thompson’s initial 1962 approach to the story. On a general level, the film is just far more unforgiving and sadistic; in part due to Scorsese’s intense approach to film, and in part due to the fact that film limitations were significantly more liberal in 1991. Any way you slice it, Scorsese’s take is the edgier of the two, and in some areas that serves as a massive benefit, while in a few others it’s a bit detrimental.

Outside of George Romero’s classic Dead series, few zombie movies have been as influential as Dan O’Bannon’s horror-comedy The Return of the Living Dead from 1985. The film was a box-office success upon release thanks to successfully combining legitimate humor with scares, memorable characters, and unique zombies. As for its place in horror history, though, the movie would become invaluable in creating some of the most enduring modern zombie characteristics. Besides being the first movie to feature “fast” zombies, the movie also set the precedent for a key component of zombie mythos: it was the first movie where zombies craved brains. Not only that, it let zombies talk. It gave them a reason to want brains and taught them how to strategize and think of ways to better attack and get more victims. Based on a popular Japanese manga, Big Tits Zombie (aka The Big Tits Dragon and Kyonyû doragon: Onsen zonbi vs sutorippâ 5) kind of defies description. Takao Nakano seems to be trying to play in the same filmmaking area as Yoshihiro Nishimura’s genre-bending output given Nakano’s introduction claiming it’s a cross between spaghetti-western, horror, historical drama(?), and kung fu. Thus, he creates the sort of film that can never be fully explained in a review; it has to be experienced. This is a movie that somehow manages to match its title in both awesomeness AND stupidity, a feat which, for better or worse, it should be commended. The “awesome” side comes from a few effectively weird and funny moments, as well as a performance that blows the entire rest of the cast away.

In 1999, Stephen King and director Craig R. Baxley teamed up to create Storm of the Century, a great and underrated TV miniseries. King next tried to write an original haunted house screenplay (inspired by Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House) initially planned as a feature film (supposedly for Steven Spielberg). After delays due to rewrites and King’s infamous “hit and run” injuries, the script would evolve into the Rose Red TV miniseries and would again end up in Baxley’s hands. The story borrows some elements from other King tales, particularly The Shining and Carrie, yet still stands on its own through atmosphere and characters, proving the first Baxley-King collaboration was no fluke.

This is a film about the making of a film – the last hoorah porn film for an aging porn star that had the unique talent of stamina and animalistic intensity in his performances. This particular porn star had been out of the business for a while now and lives with his beautiful wife and young son – but money worries allow him to be coaxed out of retirement by one of the porn directors he’d worked with in the past. The only condition for working on this last film, and collecting the huge paycheck for his participation, is that the star must know nothing of the script before hand. The whole thing is to be spontaneous and a complete surprise as it unfolds.

Check out the images from the indie horror movie Below Zero. Looking at the images and trailer below helped me warm up from this cold Tennessee night.

The story is said to be "based on true events," but this is not what you are thinking. The story being told is not a real story at all, while I guess it is technically. Rather, the screenwriter put herself into the same situation the movie's protagonist finds himself in and wrote the movie. So if you are really to stretch the meaning of real events that sounds more like a marketing ploy, or heck maybe it will turn out to be good film making.

The Pack aka La meute is a French survival horror and has mutant zombie creatures to keep the action fresh and makes it a creature feature.

Franck Richard is both the writer and director for The Pack and stars Yolande Moreau, Émilie Dequenne and Benjamin Biolay.

The Pack will be available on DVD and VOD March 6, 2012 through Indomina Releasing.

The Wicker Tree is a follow-up to the original 1973 horror film The Wicker Man. The Wicker Tree is based on Robin Hardy's novel Cowboys for Christ and is not a remake or a sequel to The Wicker Man. The film will follow some of the same themes and concepts and should be considered more of a companion piece.

I love a film that creates a scenario that can be easily categorized and fit into a cubby of understanding, only to turn the whole thing on its head the instant you settle in.

Chop begins with the abduction of Lance Reed (Billy Bakshi) by an unknown stranger (Timothy Muskatell). The stranger is determined that Lance “come clean” for some wrong he apparently committed against The Stranger in the past, but Lance has no idea what he’s talking about. No amount of threatening or chiding by The Stranger can jar Lance’s memory, so on to plan ‘B’; The Stranger has an accomplice holding his wife hostage and her screams can be heard through the speaker on his cellphone. If Lance won’t come clean on the dastardly deed he supposedly committed against The Stranger, then he will have to complete a morbid task to avoid hearing his lovely bride cut to ribbons.
