Horror New Releases, July 2007
With so many releases for July it is hard to know which are worth a salt. Best-Horror-Movies.com lists the notables.
The Monster Squad (Two-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition) - From 1987, this one puts Frankenstein together with Dracula, the Wolf Man, The Mummy and The Gillman to save the world.
Shaun of the Dead [HD DVD] - The fantastic Shaun of the Dead (BHM Review Here) on HD DVD. I know The Zombie Master will be getting this one.
The Host - A well-reviewed Korean Horror/Thriller. Subtitled.
The Number 23 - Unrated version. See the BHM Review Here.
The Hills Have Eyes 2 - The saga of the deformed freaks in the wilderness continues. Read the BHM Review Here.
Tales from the Crypt: The Complete Sixth Season - I love Tales from the Crypt, and Warner Home Video is releasing them one season at a time.
Darkman [HD DVD] - Another older title coming out in HD. Bruce Campbell in this one, in case you didn't know.
Masters of Horror - The Black Cat - A great offering from the MOH series. Read the BHM Review Here.
Welcome to the Grindhouse - Black Candles and Evil Eye - Great old exploitation films released as double features. Good stuff.
What the Peeper Saw - Horror from 1971, including the UK version titled "Night Child".
Creature - One of the monster movies from the Sci-Fi Channel. If you liked Abominable then you'll likely enjoy this.
Shadow Puppets - Straight to DVD horror with pretty good reviews.
The Grindhouse Experience 20 Film Set - This will likely be all the exploitation you will need for a couple of years.
Dead Teenagers - This is a series of scary horror shorts put out by Brain Damage Films, the distributors of BHM favorite Awaken the Dead.
Bloodlines - Horror mystery straight to DVD.
Bubba Ho-Tep (Special Edition) - From 2002 starring Bruce Campbell and directed by Don Coscarelli. Horror/Comedy where Elvis and JFK save the world.
Ghoulies IV - Did we really need 4 of these?
Premonition - This one really sailed in under the radar. Well reviewed but I haven't seen it.
New Horror Movie Reviews
Some old classics, new offerings and independents are reviewed below. Scroll down to the next section of the newsletter for the newest reviews by Horror Queen!
Slumber Party Massacre
- Slumber Party Massacre doesn’t waste valuable time with things like character development or sub-plot, leaving more time for breasts and gore. Written by BHM Contributor Michael Saunier
I Spit on Your Grave
- I Spit on Your Grave (aka Day of the Woman) is a violent film depicting rape, beatings, torture, gratuitous nudity and exploitation. So, why watch it? Michael has some thoughts. Written by BHM Contributor Michael Saunier
Tourist Trap
- Tourist Trap uses tried and true horror scenarios, typical characters and elements from a variety of horror classics. Somehow it all works for BHM contributor Michael Saunier.
Cheerleader Camp
- Cheerleader Camp is impossible to take seriously, and it was never intended to be. Still, this cheesy campy exploitation horror flick created one of the best movie quotes of all time. Written by BHM B-Movie Specialist Ronnie Angel.
Ghost Story
- Ghost Story is an old fashioned ghost story that starts out a bit hokey but deserves to be watched to the end. This one is very creepy. Written by Ronnie Angel.
Pan's Labyrinth
- Pans Labyrinth is a magical tale of good vs. evil and a child’s imagination. If you call it horror I will break your neck. Written by BHM Editor Don Sumner
Hell Bride
- Hellbride is an independent horror/comedy offering from the UK with great acting, great production and an interesting story. Still, I don’t think I get it. Written by Don Sumner.
Introducing BHM Los Angeles Correspondent Horror Queen!
When the time was right for Best-Horror-Movies.com to have some "feet on the street" to attend premiers and press-screenings of the newest mega-budget studio horror offerings a world-side search began.
Enter Horror Queen, Beauty with a Bite...
Pictures of Horror Queen will be posted as soon as we figure out how to take them. Horror Queen, it seems, cannot be seen in mirrors and does not photograph easily. Some early reviews by Horror Queen are:
Bug - Not only is the movie entitled Bug but the same word actually describes Horror Queen's experience of watching at least the last half of it.
Hostel Part 2 - In Hostel Part II Eli Roth makes the point is that humans are weak domesticated animals who can turn on a dime into brutal killers. Does he go too far?
1408 - In 1408 The Haunted Hotel storyline is made effective by strong acting, eerie visuals and Karen Carpenter.
