New Release Horror DVDs for September 2008

Even though the Horror Theatrical releases have been a bit thin lately, DVD releases are alive and well. As we approach October and that most joyus of holidays there are plenty of options for your viewing pleasure:

Supernatural - The Complete Third Season - Yet another season of this popular television series... and no, I still haven't watched it myself.

Fox Horror Classics Collection, Vol. 2 (Dragonwyck / Chandu the Magician / Dr. Renault's Secret) - Some great old horror films starring Bela and Mr. Price. I'm reviewing these now, and this month as a contest to win this collection

Pumpkinhead (Collector's Edition) - Newest DVD rendition of this popular film includes commentary, stills gallery and additional featurettes.

Child's Play (Special Edition) - This version of the horror icon has multiple commentary tracks (including Alex Vincent all grown up) and is presented in widescreen.

Day Watch [Blu-ray] - The second installment of the Russian epic presented in Blu-Ray. I don't know if you've gone the "Blu-Ray route" yet but I did a few months ago and will never go back.

Mother of Tears - Part of the Three Mothers Trilogy by Dario Argento and starring daughter Asia.

The Thing [Blu-ray] - So, my philosophy about Blu-Ray is that I'm going to make sure I have a player that also supports DVD and NEW purchases will be in Blu-Ray while keeping my extensive collection of old, only replacing a select few with the new format. This one I've replaced and I'm glad I did...

Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! - Strippers VS Zombies - Zombies and Strippers together at last... sounds like a good idea although I haven't seen either of these so can't vouch for them.

Pathology - Horror Queen reviewed this one and said that it's good. You might want to check it out if you missed it in the theater.

Seed - The famous "anti-favorite" of horror freaks everywhere, Uwe Boll, is at it again. I've read that this one is "different" and it would have to be...

Something Beneath - Another Sci-Fi Channel original now on DVD. Some of these have been pretty good but can be hit or miss...

Never Cry Werewolf - Sci-Fi Channel deux. Not my favorite werewolf movie but not terrible.

Beyond The Door - Exorcist-like movie of the week starring Juliette Mills from the TV series "Nanny and the Professor". Whether you like this one or not, I'm glad to see this kind of film coming out on DVD.

Possession - A disturbing film of sexual evil, whatever that means...

Pulse 2: Afterlife - I actually liked Pulse, the remake of a J-horror cult winner. Don't know about this sequel though, but I will check it out.

Exploitation Cinema: Cemetery Girls/ Vampire Hookers - These are bad, and that's the point. I love this kind of film.

Sleepy Hollow - I have always been a fan of this Tim Burton Gothic tale. I am not clear on whether this is a re-release or a special edition, and if special then what makes it so...

Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat - I don't know anything about this film other than it co-stars Bruce Campbell. At the end of the day, that's enough for me.

Rest Stop - Don't Look Back - I thought Rest Stop was okay, but I'm not quite sure why it needed a sequel.

A Haunting in Connecticut - From The Discovery Channel and part of a series of haunting dramas presented as documentaries.

They Wait - Ghost story, that's all I know. If anyone has details on this film I'm all ears.

Ghouls - Most reviews say this film stinks. That's all I know.

House of the Dead - I almost didn't put this one on the list because it's the only movie that I found so repulsive that I actually left the theater. Really, really bad IMHO.

Drive in Double Feature: Barracuda/Island Fury - More fun trash to round out the quality DVDs in your collection.

Last House on the Beach - Like "Last House on the Left" except with Nuns.

A Haunting in Georgia - Another of the Discovery Channel offerings. If you liked this on cable then you'll like owning the DVD.

In the Folds of the Flesh - Bizarre Itallian cult film known for shocking gore. This is reportedly remastered from the "Italian Vaults". ???

Explotation Cinema: Satan's Slave / Terror - Trash, trash and more trash. Some cult followers of Norman J. Warren may key into this one.

Zombie Bundle(Day of the Dead / Dawn of the Dead / Evil Dead II) (Amazon.com Exclusive) [Blu-ray] - This may be a good and cheaper way to transition some of your zombie favorites to Blu-Ray.

Breathing Room - Low budget horror along the lines of Saw.

Bloody Moon - Eurotrash remastering of 1981 flick complete with bad dubbing, stupid dialogue, tons of gore and gratuitous nudity.

Bad Girls Dormitory - 1984 flick about the horror of being in an all-girl correctional facility for teens. That's always a good start.

Nympha - OMG, a zombie movie with a name like that... I don't know whether to get this one or run and hide, crying.

Trackman - Subtitled Spanish film. That's all I know.

Latest Reviews on BHM

Best-Horror-Movies.com is busy bringing you the real scoop on new releases, independents, zombie flicks and the classics (or "classics" as the case may be)

Check out the latest from:

Dr. Chills, Artsy and Old Horror

The Horror of Dracula - Horror of Dracula Rivals the Best that Hollywood has to Offer with lush costumes, great actors and a climactic death scene to end all death scenes.

The Birds - The Birds asks; what would happen if nature were to suddenly decide that humans were an intolerable nuisance? I think they would win.

The Zombie Master

Zombie Strippers - With a name like Zombie Strippers what did you expect? This is a solid B movie about zombies and, uh, strippers that is a good break from serious horror.

Zombie Town - Zombie Town is an Unexpectedly Enjoyable 80 Minutes of Zombie Mayhem. This film is not particularly original, but it doesn’t have to be.

James "Crypticpsych" Lasome

13 Tzameti - 13 Tzameti's approach is far more thrilling than gallons of grue by taking a very straightforward concept and executing it to nail-biting perfection.

Three... Extremes - Three... Extremes, or Saam Gaang Yi, proves that America and England don’t have a monopoly on truly great horror anthologies. Asia knows a thing or two as well.

The Horror Czar, Independents

The Wizard of Gore - The gore in The Wizard of Gore is shockingly plentiful and the tale is intricate with Crispin Glover delivering trademark creepiness.

Us Sinners - Us Sinners could have been better if it were just… better. The film worked but would have benefited from better acting, production and polish.
