Given the fact that Priest 3d is a South Korean comic book-turned-film has all the elements of a hit in today’s times – vampires, religion, the apocalypse and cowboys, it really should have been better.

Welcome to the future planet earth, the desolate remains of our human world, with walled in Cities to protect those warrior Priests managed to save from the vampire apocalypse. The now obsolete Priests have been ostracized to the depths of the Cities; but rumor has it the vampires are getting a little antsy on their ‘reservations’ and the Priests may be needed once again. Priests by the way are easily identified by the crosses tattooed on their foreheads, and frustrated demeanor.
In comes our favorite heroic Priest (Paul Bettany) to save his
‘niece’ Lucy who’s been taken by some of these renegade vampires. The
problem is the rulers of the not totalitarian City – the Monsignors –
have turned a blind eye to the vampires in order to maintain order
within the City walls, making it almost impossible for Priest to leave
and fight an enemy that ‘is no longer a threat’. What ensues is a few
rogue Priests set out to exterminate what’s left of the vampires. And
it’s a good thing…because the vampires are just about to take a
leisurely train ride into the City for a visit.
Here’s the problem with Priest 3D. The lure of vampiredom is
that we can live forever and still be fairly attractive if not sexy,
albeit in need of a little dental work. The vampires in this movie have
no such attraction. Who wants to be a hunched over slimy, bald, eyeless
beast? And if you’re a fan of the ‘vampires walking among us’ era (Twilight
,
Let Me In, True Blood
), forget it. The Priest 3D
vampires don’t even walk, much less among us. It’s us or them. The
creeping, spastic, flying vampires are frightening yes, but in more of
an action sci-fi way.

Take the supposed vampire horror out of Priest 3D and try and enjoy it as an action sci-fi and what do you get? Still, an action packed film that leaves you empty. There’s just too much going on in Priest 3D and relatively no character development. And the 3D element taken on in post production is a waste of time. Lastly, this film's ending allusion to a sequel just makes us frustrated the filmmakers didn’t spend more effort on the current film.
