Are the Open Water Movies About Real People?

I just saw Open Water 1 and 2. Both of the movies stated that the events were based on true happenings. After I saw Open Water 2, I wanted to research more about what happened since it's supposed to be based on true events. As I was surfing the net, a lot of the websites indicate that Open Water is based on true events but nothing says Open Water 2 is true as well.

Care to clarify my confusion?
