'The Strangers'

The Strangers is the closest I can think of that is similar to The Collector in the time frame, but the stories are rather different. The Strangers does not have any thief and is three masked people terrorizing a couple mostly from the outside of the house.

I am pretty sure The Collector is the one you are looking for. I am not aware of any movies in the time frame with a similar plot as you described.

P.S. I guess the Saw series have have something in common as well since The Collector villain uses traps and I believe the director or writer had something to do with Saw in the past.

I'm not sure, but I think this is the movie I'm looking for too. Just to be sure, were there any others with a plot similar to this that came out in 2008-2009?

If it was recent as in this year, it sounds like The Collector. I don't recall him being specifically an art thief, but could have been.
