Bad Dreams is a 80s horror movie with the
usual cheesy trappings, plus the unexpected.
Bad Dreams
is original, interesting and well acted, with great effects to boot.
This isn’t the 80s horror I know!

I can say with all honesty that Bad Dreams
is one of the more interesting horror films I have seen lately. I was
actually very entertained and impressed with what I originally thought
would be just another cheesy mid 80s B-movie with bad hair, bad music,
and crappy acting.
Well, the music is still cheesy and the hair and styles of the time are
just as bad as ever, but Bad Dreams really manages
to stand out above the rest of the pack with great acting,
an original story (okay it is slightly similar to Nightmare
part 3, but still...) and of course, tons upon tons
of gore to make it all worth while!
The
movie revolves around Cynthia (played by the beautiful and overlooked
actress Jennifer Rubin) when she wakes up from a thirteen year coma and
finds herself in an institution. What is the cause of the coma? Well,
when Cynthia was younger, she was brought up in a Jonestown-ish hippie
love cult out in the desert called “Unity Fields”.
We get to see the end of this sect with a mass suicide
by burning to death started by the crazed leader Harris (Richard Lynch). Cynthia managed to be the only survivor.
Now,
years later after coming out of the coma and being introduced
to her "support group" and her doctors, Cynthia begins to be haunted by
the spirit of a disfigured Harris. Harris shows up at
the institution
and promises to kill everyone in her support group if she does not
agree to join him again in the afterlife. What follows is nonstop
excitement, action and gore packed horror with quite a decent amount of
humor and insanity thrown in for good measure.
Like I said this one of the more interesting horror films I have seen
lately. I even bought a copy immediately after the first viewing. There
is tons upon tons of gore in this one of course, including a brutal
self inflicted knife through the hand. Ouch!
Not only is there lots of gore, but surprisingly lots of expensive
looking special effects! GASP! Not in the world of B-movie 80s horror I
know! You will see it here.
In my
opinion the back story does not get enough attention in horror
movies, but in Bad Dreams the back story of the
cult is excellent, making this movie more original. The story
surrounding the institution also has a good amount of detail, along
with some great twists and turns.
Bad
Dreams is the perfect horror movie any time for
just good old fashioned entertainment. You will be entertained by 80s horror movie gem, and you should check it out if you can find it.
