Blood Junkie is 80s Cheese Through and Through

Blood Junkie was produced in 2010 and released in 2011, and although the 80s reenactment is perfectly executed the horror is a bit lame… just like so many 80s slasher films.

Laura (Sarah Luther) and Rachel (Emily Treolo) are two gnarly chicks who are looking to party this weekend. After flirting shamelessly with the nerdy clerk at the quicky-mart to buy booze they are feeling pretty unstoppable, when suddenly things get better… two hot studs (Craig Wilson and Teddy Bender) are lurking outside the store looking for a party themselves, and make their move on the young ladies. The girls have the booze, the guys have a place in mind to go camping, and everyone is gonna get laid… perfect weekend except for one thing. The girls have to babysit.

No matter – a quick bribe of the young man to be sat for is all that’s needed to head off for an exciting weekend of drinking, smoking and humping. Unfortunately there is some kind of psycho killer on the loose near the camping site, and he will show no mercy because he is a “JUNKIE!”… Blood Junkie, to be exact.

Blood Junkie is a low budget slasher film that is based squarely on the low budget horror of the 80s. Not those that later became classics like Friday the 13th, The Evil Dead or The Howling, mind you, but the multitude of others thatBlood Junkie - Cool dudes in the cool ride (mom's car) have not fared quite so well like Galaxy of Terror, Nightmare in a Damaged Brain, Don’t Go Into the Woods or Nail Gun Massacre. Some of the horror from the 80s just stinks, some stink so bad they are fun, and others have simply disappeared like a slightly unpleasant dream upon awakening. They all have something in common, though, that makes them very fun for horror freaks to watch today – the 80s cheese! It is from the standpoint of 80s retrospective that Blood Junkie truly excels.

Every detail in Blood Junkie is correct and accurate for the time period it’s portraying – that coming from a guy who lived squarely in this period and accepted it as viable reality. Phones, cars, clothes – even the neighborhoods and houses shown are completely consistent with the middle class track homes that expanded across the country during this colorful and totally cool period. In fact, Blood Junkie does such a great job of reenacting the 80s that I had to check IMDb and other sources more than once to make sure I wasn’t confused and actually watching an older flick that was just getting it’s first DVD release. I don’t need to kick that horse any more as it’s thoroughly dead… This film did the 80s period perfectly. But what about the horror?

Blood Junkie - backpacking 70s hold-out hippy

There are mixed feelings about the actual horror movie that is Blood Junkie. On one hand, in spite of the absolute classics of horror that came from the 80s, many had certain characteristics that really didn’t work and were totally stupid, and Blood Junkie does this too. Maybe that was on purpose. On the other hand, Blood Junkie is totally stupid, and I don’t particularly care for totally stupid. The characters are fun, the kills are “okay”, but the whole thing moves a bit slowly and the “big surprise twist” is just goofball mania.

So, the question: is the homage to the 80s enough to carry a horror film? As much as the 80s part of Blood Junkie completely works, there is a difference between watching a good horror movie and watching one that kind of sucks but is fun because of how dated it is… this one fallsBlood Junkie - 2011 horror, monster in gas mask into the second category, but isn’t really dated because it’s not really from the 80s. Confusing, I know, but the bottom line is this:

Blood Junkie is fun for it’s 80s gimmick, less fun as a horror film. Knowing that, you will choose to watch this one or not, and whatever you choose it will be the right decision.
