Box That Turns People To Ash When Opened

I saw a movie in 2006 that could have come out prior to that.

A man is charged with guarding a box that turns people to dust/ash when opened. He's supposed to give it to someone when he receives a sign/signal.

People are trying to get the box from him.

In the end, the guardian of the box is an old man sitting in his chair still holding onto the box, possibly with a shot gun or rifle in his hand.
