Boy Strangled in Sleep by Wooden Toy Horse's Red String

I remember an 80's film about a boy and his wooden toy horse.

The boy insists on taking the horse to bed with him, against his mother's wishes. It's a toy that you pull along by a string.

The boy calls for his mother several times one night, and her husband tells her to leave him alone so she does.

In the morning when she goes to check on him, she discovers he's been strangled to death by the red string from the horse.

After this she goes driving one night and sees her son's ghost by a lake.

I don't really remember much else about the film, and I have no idea what it's called! Help!
