B&W: Man Eating Willow Tree Rips Off Man's Arm

I'm looking for a black & white film that takes place on an island where a willow tree grabs a man - one of the non-English speaking boat crew - and rips his arm off as he runs away in a panic.

The scene that sticks in my mind is the arm, dangling from the willow-like branches of the tree, then a close-up on the waxy looking arm with a ring still attached to one finger. Creepy!

There might have been the obligatory dame whining to get off the island, and maybe a nerdy scientist-type trying to unravel the mystery.
