The basic synopsis of Captivity has the potential
to be quite compelling. Unfortunately it goes awry early on and never
really recovers. That said the acting is decent and horror buffs may
appreciate some of the truly nauseating scenes (Horror Queen actually
gagged while watching our heroine Jennifer choke down a "human
smoothie"
at the hands of our murderous brotherly duo). That's right - not one
but two blood-thirsty sadists wreak havoc in this shocking, twisting
yet ultimately disappointing film.
Directed by Roland Joffe of The Killing Fields
fame, Captivity is the story of a very successful
young supermodel Jennifer Tree (Elisha Cuthbert), adored by millions,
who is stalked, drugged and kidnapped by demented predators with an
Oedipus complex. In short, you might say the brothers hate women as
they hated their own mother (before killing her). This is explained in
a sobering little home made childhood film the brothers watch over and
over again.
And there
is nothing more dangerous (and fitting for the plot of a
horror film) than deranged killers with a lot of money. Killer
Ben...now that is funny...a killer named Ben. Ben is your mild-mannered
neighbor. Ben is that nice boy on The Waltons. This
Ben is a sadistic murderer with expensive audio-visual equipment,
medical supplies and torture apparatus. Apparently the catering
business Ben and his brother own is very successful, perhaps due to
unique-tasting pâté.
And
Jennifer is not just your ordinary gorgeous blonde victim either.
She doesn't cower in the face of torture and mutilation like many
would...she fights back. Even in constant and un-relentless fear of her
captor, Jennifer remains calm enough "give it up" for Gary, a fellow
captive. Apparently when you put two good looking prisoners together in
a bedroom cell they will instantly have sex.
Speaking of this little romantic interlude, every horror film seems to
have that ironic comedic moment, often unintended. Captivity's
moment is when Jennifer and Gary finally find that slim chance to
escape, and Jennifer allows Gary to stop and spend some time looking
for a potential "sex tape" of them, which may damage her career. Now
that's a (probably dead) supermodel whose publicist would be very proud!
Elisha Cuthbert fans may want to see Captivity just
to watch her decent performance...plus she's pretty and so is Gary.
Other than that this film somehow manages to be both frightening and
dull at the same time. Really it should remain in captivity.
