Child Strikes Monster With Magic Book

When I was young I saw this 80's movie with my dad about a little boy that lives in a house surrounded by trees.

There is some sort of magic book that the little boy has. When a horned animal-looking monster tries to attack him, he hits it with the book. There's a big explosion and the moster is sent away.

A professor whas also somehow involved.
