In a genre starving for an original concept, the
doll in Childs Play that becomes possessed by the
consciousness of a killer was snatched up by movie fans everywhere.
Release:
1988 Directed by: Tom Holland Written by: Don Mancini
Starring:
Catherine Hicks as Karen Barclay Chris
Sarandon as Mike Norris Alex Vincent
as Andy Barclay Brad Dourif as Charles
Lee Ray
Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) is a vicious killer. He also
practices black magic and has plans to transfer his soul
to the body of another person one day, thus gaining immortality.
Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) is
a New York City detective with one thing on his mind: Capturing and incarcerating
Charles Lee Ray.
Childs Play
begins with a final showdown between Ray and Norris, and it looks as if
the detective will get his wish. Norris has Charles trapped in a toy
store with no means of escape, and Charles is injured to
boot. And, much to the dismay of the hardened killer there are no other
people close enough for him to transfer his soul to…it
appears that immortality will slip through his grubby little
fingers and he’s destined to spend Christmas in the
Big House…but wait!
The
hottest seller during the Christmas season is the “Good
Guy” doll, and the toy store is stocked with loads of them.
Transfer the soul of a vicious killer into a doll? Hey, this
is horror…why not?
Childs Play
is a completely ridiculous concept, and really
isn’t scary. It is entertaining though, and has created a
very popular character with the doll “Chucky”.
Several sequels and millions of Internet searches later, Chucky remains
a very popular and well known horror movie monster.
If you are a movie fan but not a
Horror Freak, then you will like Childs Play
because:
•
The Chucky doll is cute and funny looking, and
it’s pretty hilarious when the voice changes and he makes
snide sarcastic remarks.
• The fact that the
killer in Childs Play is about 2 feet tall
makes him immeasurably less menacing and easier to watch for the
squeamish.
• The story integrates
some good tension and action with the antics of the terrible toy, so
the easily scared may indeed get a bit scared.
For those
Horror Freaks out there, Childs Play is likely
going to be a bit light-hearted for your palate. I
mean, come on…it’s a doll!
Dolls have no muscles or other means of movement, and yet this one runs
around wielding a knife. He has no leverage (weighing all of about five
pounds as evidenced by the child (Alex Vincent) carrying him around
with ease) and yet he seems to knock people down and cause scenes of
severe struggle. Heck, he doesn’t even need
batteries, and he doesn’t seem to eat or do
anything else to gain power or strength. What’s up with that?
Childs Play
is a pretty cool concept that is an entertaining watch, as long as you
don’t go into the whole thing expecting to be terrified and
have nightmares. There are more holes in the story
than red hairs on a “Good Guys” doll head.
Chucky is
not going to go away, however. There have been several sequels to Childs
Play, the most recent of which has ‘ole Chucky siring
a child with his girlfriend.
