Classic Film With Evil Tree Root in Basement of Haunted Mansion

Hello,

I'm looking for the title of a classic film from the 40's-60's about a haunted house.

A young couple moves into the old mansion after their honeymoon, and it turns out to be haunted by an evil power or a dominant "patriach" of some sort.

I remember a kind of weeping noise like a sheep's bleating, as an important element of the plot. It turns out to be a child crying.

Eventually there's a showdown in the basement where the man discovers the source of all terrifying disturbances is in an old tree's rooten root in a walled-up room behind a scruffy shelf or closet.

The man tries to chop it off, against the intervention of the evil power.

It's not The Uninvited or Terror in the Haunted House both of which I own.
