Creatures in Terrarium Kill Dog and People

I'm looking for a film that was made prior to 1990 about some guy with weirdo creatures in a terrarium in his garage or basement that kick up sand and build structures, and maybe mimic his face.
His dog jumps on the terrarium and they eat him. He finally loses it and I think they get him to.
Any ideas on a title? I've been looking all over the place. Thanks!
