Dead Man Walking in 70's Film

On a weekend afternoon in the mid to late 70's, my brothers and I saw a movie on TV that scared the heck out of my youngest brother for years.
It was scary, not gory and I always thought the name of the movie was Dead Man Walking, but can't find an older movie of that name.
A tall, well-dressed, strong-looking man who looks dead comes out of the closet and goes lumbering after his victim.
I know this isn't much to go on but with my baby brother turning 40 in 2010 I am hoping to add it to the box of things we still talk about and laugh over all these years later. Any hints, clues or ideas would be much appreciated!
