Dear Zombie Master: How Do They Know?

Dear Zombie Master,

How can a zombie tell if the person standing in front of them is a non-infected person or another zombie?  They seem dumb, so why don't they attack fellow zombies as well?

I am not fond of answering questions from "Anonymous" (I mean really, you expect me to take time out from being perfectly paranoid to answer your question, but you can't take the time to come up with a fake name), and I believe this has been answered before, but it has been a while so...

It has been shown several times, most recently in AMC's The Walking Dead series, that the most proficient way of distinguishing between the living and the living dead is by a zombie's sense of smell. It is not the only way, but it is the first and foremost way.
