Dear Zombie Master: Is George A. Romero Founder of Modern Zombies?

Dear Zombie Master,
I have a dispute with someone and am hoping you can help. Did or did not George A. Romero found the Modern Zombie Movie Genre?
I'm talking about zombie movies with the cannibalistic corpses you have to shoot through the head to kill, not those in films made prior
to 1968 when Romero released his original Night of The Living Dead.
As far as I know, Romero was the guy who started it all. But, if not Romero, who did start the genre?
Thank you for your time,
Joe V
Joe,
You are absolutely correct. The undead beastie that we all know and love today as the modern zombie got it's most glorious start from the mind of George A. Romero. Read my short write-up at http://www.best-horror-movies.com/zombie-movie-history.html.
Although it needs to be updated for the first decade of the 2000's, it will give you a short history of the zombie film. Hopefully it gives you enough to want to learn more.
Good hunting and aim high,
The Zombie Master
