Dear Zombie Master: Machetes for Zombie Kills?

by Leo!!!
(anchorage AK)

Dear Zombie Master,

I often see recommendations for the use of machetes to fend off zombies. This has always puzzled me. If you think about, it wouldn't machetes be fairly useless? To kill a zombie with a machete you would have to either slice through the skull deep enough to damage the medulla, or you would have to cleave it clean off! This would take way too much effort and as you see in the 1987 Dawn of the Dead the machete got stuck in the zombies head and had to be deserted.

Due to this I have always believed that bludgeoning weapons like baseball bats and such would be vastly superior.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

thanks,
-Leo

Leo,

I completely agree with you. Bludgeoning weapons are far superior to the machete. I happen to prefer the crowbar because of its weight. The machete is good to have though because if you get that close and you have no hope what so ever then you can at least take one more with you when you go.
Good hunting and aim high,

The Zombie Master

Smashing vs slicing

Crowbar vs machete

The tactical advantages of a crow bar are size, weight and versatility. New models of crowbars have been developed which combine a crow bar and a breaker bar. These Chinese made crow bars weigh about 12 lbs and are 4 feet long, which allows you superior reach and impact damage, weight and size of the bar does make it difficult to run long distances with, and your speed will be affected. Power is derived from the equation speed x strength hopefully the sheer weight of 12 lbs crashing down will make up for the loss in control and speed. 2 main factors that you have to look at that gives a crow bar an advantage is its availability and its uses to pry open everything from jammed doors ammunition boxes.

The Machete: advantages and disadvantages
There is generally more control and accuracy with a blade allowing more speed and next to no resistance. the downfall of bladed weapons are they have to hit soft flesh, and often stick in bone. machetes are designed for hacking, therefor they do not have a very sharp edge. grinding and filing a machete to correct this would do more harm then good causing the blade to become thin and more chance to dull, bend or even break the blade. as far as it goes for zombies, modern folklore will lead one to believe that even severing the head allows the head to remain alive. Which causes a second problem disposing of a snapping rolling zombie head. Last thing I want walking throw the woods is to step on a zombie head bear trap. Availability of machete's might become a problem, at least good ones, if you do decide on a machete, i would go with one made by Gerber for there weight and thickness of the blade.

Machetes

I agree with the fact that heavy objects are better, as they are easier to cause brain damage with. However a machete would also be good for emergency situations - you could use it to dismember the zombies or stab at them to slow them down.

Weapons

You're in luck. I'm in the UK guns and blades are really, really hard to get hold of, so for us its down to the old Cricket Bat or Golf Club.

Face it, in a Zombie Attack the UK's resistance is probably not going to last very long.

I don't know

Well the point is to cleave the head clean off. Trying to slice through it would be a waste of time, and your life.

But I agree with you on the crowbar - I would like to have a titanium model though.

So I'm really not sure which I would rather have.
