As I was reading through the top 100 best horror movies
list on this site, I had one movie on my mind the whole time. I thought
this movie could even be number 1 on the list possibly. However, I was
shocked to see that not only was it not in the top ten, it didn't even
make the list at all!
What movie is so good that I think it could be numero uno? None other than my all time favorite, Dont Look Now!
For those not familiar with the movie, please know that while it is not
exactly the most well known horror movie of all time, it has possibly
one of the most well known endings of all time! Weird, no? Dont Look Now is much, much more than a run-of-the-mill horror movie and is quite thought provoking and dramatic. In fact, I believe that Dont Look Now was ahead of its time.
Dont Look Now was originally released in 1973 and was based on a
short novel by Daphne Du Maurier. It begins in England, with happy
couple John and Laura Baxter, played by Donald Sutherland and Julie
Christie, relaxing in their home as their daughter and son play
outside. The daughter is playing with a little ball near the pond on
the family property when she loses it in the pond, and goes to get it.
At this moment the father is looking through pictures of his newest
work project, an old church in Venice, when he spills water on one
particular picture and when the color runs out of it, it looks kind of
like blood. Immediately, as if through ESP, he realizes something is
wrong and rushes outside all too late, and finds his daughter has
drowned.
Fast forward a few months, and the parents have relocated to Venice,
Italy and John is working on the new project. Laura meets up with two
old women there, one of which is blind as well as psychic, and begins
to see them quite a bit. The blind woman tells Laura that she can
“see” her dead daughter and also warns that John's life is
in grave danger as long as they are in Venice. Right about this time,
John starts to see glimpses of a person around the dark corners of
Venice at night wearing the same red rain coat that his daughter was
wearing when she drowned. Is it really his daughter's spirit, or
something else?
All the while there are random murders being committed around the city.
When Laura gets called back to England to care for their son who was in
an accident, things start to get interesting. John nearly falls to his
death, and he keeps seeing the person in the red raincoat. He also
starts getting glimpses of his wife with the two old women, even though
is wife is in Englad. From this point on panic and confusion set in and
Dont Look Now spins toward its frightening ending…and I wouldn't want to give that part away.
One of the interesting things about Dont Look Now
is the setting and the visuals of the movie. It is very atmospheric and
at times the movie is, dare I say, beautiful in the visuals. The
setting in Venice is perfect and the cinematography and locations
capture the moods of different scenes really well.
The scenes of John Baxter chasing the red raincoat wearer through the dark alleys in Venice are especially creepy.
Don’t Look Now has more to do with the paranormal than
anything else. This movie is also well known for having a very long and
very, um,.. visual sex scene in it. If you can get through that, I
guess you could get through anything.
