Drag Me to Hell Pushes All the Right Buttons

With Drag me to Hell Horror fans may rest assured that Raimi’s mastery of and passion for the genre remain intact. Writer-Director Sam Raimi of Spider-Man fame has finally returned to his horror roots (Evil Dead, Army of Darkness) and the fact that this film is rated PG-13 has no bearing on its ability to frighten the bejesus out us.

Drag Me to Hell sets the stage early on for the intense visual imagery and jolt factor we can expect throughout the film. And history is about to repeat itself when our heroin Christine falls victim to an ancient curse, spending the next three days undergoing relentless assault by an evil spirit attempting to literally drag her to hell. An uncomplicated plot yes, but a film that manages to push all the right buttons.

As supernatural curses go, this one’s a doozy.

Drag me to Hell (2009) Gypsy Lorna Raver begging Loan Officer Alison Lohman for mortage extensionWe’re first introduced to it years back when a woman tries to lift the cursefrom her young son, unfortunately to no avail and he’s in fact dragged tohell. Now, years later, eager-beaver Christine Brown turns down an old gypsy woman’s request for an extension on her mortgage payment in effort to get that Assistant Manager job she’s been eyeing at the bank. More than a request actually - the old woman gets down on her knees and begs Christine not to take her house. What Christine doesn’t bargain for is the curse put on her by the gypsy after she‘s escorted out of the bank ominously shouting “you shamed me!”

Drag me to Hell (2009) Gypsy CurseSo as any normal, cursed girl would do, Christine tries to reinstate the loan for the old woman the next day - only to find that she’s dead. Oops.

Luckily Christine’s boyfriend Clay decides to help her, even after she embarrasses him in front of his parents with her sudden demonic possession (c’mon -most guys would run). And what are the chances she would wander right into the shop of a fortune teller who knows just what she needs to do to rid herself of the curse?

Drag Me to Hell has some great tongue-in-cheek humor. More importantly though, the graphic visual imagery isDrag me to Hell (2009) Seance to try and break the hell curse brilliant. Never before have I seen a fly enter someone’s nostril and exit the other, and let’s not forget the projectile nosebleed that has Christine’s boss wondering if she’s really Assistant Management material after all. But the removal and replacement of the old gypsy’s dentures and visions of her gnawing at Christine with a mouth of gums is the most difficult image to shake. Seriously.

Animal rights activists will most certainly have a problem with Drag Me to Hell, but let’s face it - a girl who would throw an old woman out onto the streets just to get a promotion would probably take out a few cats and goats with ease if she needed to.

Drag me to Hell (2009) Gypsy Corpse raised by Alison Lohman

Does Christine escape being dragged to hell by the ancient curse put upon her? And if so will she still be mean to old ladies? Let’s just say that Assistant Manager’s chair may still be empty…
