Masters of Horror Season 2, Episode 13: Dream
Cruise
The Second
Season of the Masters of
Horror series on Showtime combines top horror
writers and
directors together for a second year creating some incredible (and some
not so incredible) one-hour features. Dream Cruise,
the thirteenth
episode of season 2 is a classic Asian ghost story.

Synopsis: Jack Miller (Daniel Gillies) is
a lawyer based in
Tokyo, Japan. His client, Eiji Saito (Ryo Ishibashi), is in trouble and
Jack requests a meeting to discuss options. Eiji wants the meetings to
take place on his boat with his wife Yuri Saito (Yoshino Kimura) in
attendance. In Dream Cruise, however, here are
three problems
with this plan. First, Jack is completely terrified of water from a
past experience when his younger brother died while boating. Second,
Jack is having an affair with Yuri, and Eiji knows about it. Third, the
place that Eiji is taking them happens to be where his first wife
suddenly disappeared.
Thoughts: I liked Dream Cruise.
It is not my favorite but
it is viewable. Again, Ryo Ishibashi shines in his role and Yoshino
Kimura did very well. As a matter of fact, the entire Asian cast made
Daniel Gillies look like a high school thespian thrown amongst Oscar
winners. The only thing that might turn some people off is the fact
that if you have seen one modern Japanese ghost story you have seen
them all. One malcontent spirit with really long black hair attacks
those who enter the cursed area that is also her domain. Sounds
familiar and can get tiring, but Dream Cruise is
only an hour long so it is actually pretty good.
