Evil Black Substance Arises From Basement

There's a horror film similar to Evil Dead but in a suburban setting that I'm trying to recall the name of.
Evil comes up from the basement and a husband and wife smell the stench. A black substance then spreads throughout the house.
Not much to go on I know. Any ideas?
