Freddy vs Jason begins with Freddy
Krueger narrating the events of his past progression as a
child murderer. Screen shots of Freddy’s own scarred mouth
overlay scenes of a pre-burnt Freddy murdering children and burning
their teddies in a Psycho-esque manner which, although a good concept
to fill us in on Freddy’s history, are gladly left behind for
the rest of the film.
After Freddy's reminiscences end, we are whisked to Jason
Voorhees in a death/dream-state reliving a past murder using
the typical but brilliantly never-out-grown method of impaling someone
to a tree on his machete. The faces change from one past victim to
another, each giving him reasons why he was right and why they
deserved to die. Suddenly what appears to be Pamela Voorhees confronts
Jason and orders him to arise from the grave and massacre the children
of Elm street. But of course appearances can be deceiving...
Once Jason somehow resurrects through sheer willpower, Freddy reveals
himself as the force behind the appearance of Mommy Dearest.
Freddy’s plan is simple enough - Jason kills people, Krueger
gets blamed and the fear of Freddy Krueger re-emerges to fuel
Freddy’s life-force.
A few murders (fantastically thought out and imaginative ones at that)
ensue and Freddy, who is revealed when two kids in an asylum escape and
tell people about him, regains power.
However, Jason is taking more than his fair share. A revitalized Freddy
must stop Jason from taking all of the victims for himself.
A huge,
gory and awesome battle explodes in Freddy vs Jason
with a feast of slicing, slashing, stabbing, burning, chopped-off arm
impaling and heads ramming through windows. Giving away the details of
such a dismemberingly delicious gore-fest is just criminal, you've got
to watch it yourself.
All this leads up to a wicked climax where a sweetly imagined death
match ensues, and, after most are totally splattered and tattered, two
of the brave kids transport Jason to Crystal Lake to give him what they
call the “Home Field Advantage”.
Freddy
vs Jason appeals to me not only because of my love for the Nightmare
on Elm Street and Friday
the 13th franchises or the excitement of both
characters in the same film, but because I like my slashers with plenty
of “protagonist fighting back”. That’s
why I think chain-em-up torture films like Hostel suck so much
– there is no fighting or trap-like kills.
Freddy
vs Jason is not only an awesome film for hardened Horror
Freaks, but also for newbies to the slasher arena due to the creative
kills and scary villains. That’s what the slasher sub-genre
is all about.
Freddy vs Jason is simply an awesome film full of gore,
excitement, scares and scattered gems of Freddy’s comedy
quips and wickedness. Oh, and the chance to see Freddy Krueger perform
Thai boxing moves to Jason’s ribs. Questions
