Having cut my horror teeth on Friday the 13th, I wanted more. Actually, it was more of a need than a want. It was like a drug. I had been given a taste and I liked it. I was in need of a fix. The natural conclusion was to find Friday the 13th Part 2. After watching it, I had a sudden craving for a drink and a smoke. Needless to say, I was very satisfied.

Friday the 13th part 2 - Alice gets the screwdriverFriday the 13th Part 2 begins with Alice (Adrienne King), the only survivor from the events of the previous film, reliving the terror of that fateful night in her dreams. She awakens, gets in and out of the shower, proceeds to the kitchen and opens the refrigerator door only to find the head of Pamela Voorhees. It is at this moment that someone (don't tell anyone but its Jason) grabs Alice and rams a screwdriver through her head. (Yes!)

Friday the 13th Part 2 - Jason Voorhees' shackFast forward 5 years and we find Paul Holt (John Furey) and Ginny Field (Amy Steel) opening up another camp just across the lake from Camp Blood. They are training a new batch of counselors and at dinner half of them decide to go into town. This successfully splits up the staff thus making it a lot easier for Jason to start taking out the counselors one at a time. And depending on the circumstances, even two at a time.

Paul and Ginny find the bodies and discover that the killer is Jason Voorhees (told ya) and he is just a little bit upset about what happened to his mother. Jason proceeds to make light duty of Paul and proceeds to chase Ginny around the camp.

Friday the 13th part 2 - unmasked Jason needs a haircutSteve Miner (director and producer) doesn't stray too far from what Sean Cunningham produced with Friday the 13th but he really didn't have to. The stage had already been set. Steve Miner just took the reins and ran with it. The result is Friday the 13th Part 2, a sequel that is every bit as intense as the original. The special effects, this time done by Steven Kirshoff, and the sound track, by the master Henry Manfredini, play a strong role in creating the atmosphere that Miner was looking for.

Friday the 13th Part 2 also fully introduced us to Jason Voorhees. Michael Myers (Halloween) may have been the first, but Jason is definitely the best known of all slashers. Jason could be classified as the MacGyver of the slashers. It does not matter where he is, Jason can find something to kill with.

Friday the 13th part 2 - Ginny with a pitchfork

Of all the Friday the 13th sequels (yes, I own all of them), Friday the 13th Part 2 is the most deserving to sit on the classic shelf with the original. It does not have the campy style that the others have. It stayed true to the original while still adding to the history of the main character. Even if you don't own the entire library, the first two should be a staple for any "horror freak". Questions or comments about Friday the 13th part 2? Contact us!
