From Beyond Brings Back
the Team that made Re-Animator Great
From
Beyond is
not the typical H.P. Lovecraft big-screen adaptation as not
many film
makers can do justice to a Lovecraft story. Stuart Gordon, however, can.

Once upon a time there was a house at 666 Benevolent St.
where strange happenings were afoot. The neighbors were constantly
complaining about the noise and the bright lights at all hours of the
night. But they didn’t understand. Nobody understood. There
were experiments going on in that house that were necessary for the
good of science. Studies were being done into the strengthening of the
pineal, or sixth sense, gland. Doctor’s heads were being
bitten off.
This is where we start our journey into From Beyond.
Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) finds himself in an insane asylum
after witnessing Dr. Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel) lose his head,
literally, when a monster from another dimension bites it off. Dr.
Katherine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton) sees a way to delve deeper into
the pineal gland studies by taking Crawford back to the house and
redoing the experiments. This requires a police escort because Crawford
is the chief suspect in the disappearance of Dr. Pretorius’
head. The escort is provided by Buford “Bubba”
Brownlee (Ken Foree).
Once
at the house, they decide to repair and power on the Resonator, the
machine that opens the doorway to another dimension. This just makes
things go from bad to worse. The monster that ate Dr.
Pretorius’ head has taken his brain and begun to grow into a
new being altogether and is bound and determined not to go back to his
original dimension. The three amigos are also being affected by the
Resonator and are having adverse reactions.
From
Beyond brought back the team that brought us Re-Animator.
Stuart Gordon in the director’s chair, Brian Yuzna this time
in the writer’s chair, and H. P. Lovecraft. It is so hard to
find someone who understands Lovecraft enough to do him justice on the
big screen but Stuart Gordon is the master.
Jeffrey
Combs returns for a fantastic portrayal of Crawford Tillinghast and
just proves his placement in the horror lexicon is not by accident. Any
fan will recognize Ken Foree from Dawn
of the Dead in the role as
“Bubba” Brownlee. The special effects team did an
incredible job creating the atmosphere with both gore and over-the-top
Lovecraftian monsters.
If you love the works by H. P. Lovecraft then From Beyond
is one of the few films that do his work justice. After watching From
Beyond you should then go through Stuart Gordon’s
complete library. You will truly not be disappointed. Questions
