Girl Befriends Tree Monster in '70s film

I remember a '70s movie where a girl befriends a bush or leave monster in her backyard and keeps going outside to feed him and as she does, he grows.

The actress played in a lot of these type movies.

IMDb synopsis:
During a stay at her family's summer home, friendless Brenda Alden traps a strange creature in a quarry and befriends it. Brenda is vacationing with her family on an island when she comes across a creature in the woods. At first afraid of it, she manages to imprison it in a pit. Since she has no friends due to her bad behavior, she finds that the creature might be her only hope of being loved.
