The Haunting of Molly Hartley is Arguably the Best Horror Film of the Year

The Haunting of Molly Hartley is quite an astonishing film on many accounts, not the least of which is the fact that it is Mickey Liddell’s Directorial debut. In a sea of slasher movies that typically comprise the horror genre, this film stands apart as a truly chilling tale that combines edge-of-your-seat suspense with a compelling mystery involving the supernatural.

The Powerful The Haunting of Molly Hartley screenplay by writers John Travis and Rebecca Sonnenshine is well acted by experienced cast members Jake Weber (Dawn of the Dead, Medium) and Shannon Marie Woodward (The Riches) as well as relative newbie Haley Bennett who plays Molly Hartley.

Before we’re introduced to Molly Hartley, we’re taken back in time eleven years ago to a murder involving a young girl who, like Molly in the present, is about to turn eighteen. Apparently something so bad is believed to happen to both girlsat this age that it renders their own parents attempted filicides (those who kill theirThe Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008) Kiss of Death? own children). We don’t yet know what is supposed to happen at age eighteen, but obviously it’s more than the usual staying out past curfew.

When Molly is introduced we find she and her father have moved to a new town after her mother’s institutionalization. Probably a good idea because when your mom tries to kill you…well…how embarrassing. This means a new prep school for Molly and some interesting new friends (i.e. the religious freak Alexis, the cute boy Joseph who flirts with her despite his evil-eyeing girlfriend and Leah who like Molly regularly visits the school shrink).

Molly seems to adjust well to her new world – oh wait, except for the sudden nose bleeds and weird voices that turn out to be due to a brain tumor that she has to have removed by a John McCain look-alike. Typical teenage stuff. At least that’s what Joseph thinks as he continues to pursue Molly despite the fact that 1. she’s a basket case event after the brain tumor removal and 2. she breaks someone’s arm in half at a party. Ah puppy love.

Molly on the other hand does not believe her brain tumor was the problem. Visions of her mother coming toward her with a butcher knife keep appearing until she finally learns the real story about what catastrophic impact she may have on the world when she turns eighteen. And believe me it has nothing to do with voting for McCain.

The Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008) Bloody Phone Call

In The Haunting of Molly Hartley the question is; Can Molly stop her predestined fate and still live to see her birthday in The Haunting of Molly Hartley? Let’s just say when you’re trying to beat the clock make sure you’re actually paying attention to where the hands are.
