The Masters of Horror series
on Showtime brings the top horror writers and directors together for a
series of incredible one-hour features. The sixth episode,
Homecoming directed by
Joe Dante takes the "social commentary" element of horror to such an
extreme that it becomes nothing more than an anti-war propaganda film.

air date: December 2, 2005 Directed by: Joe Dante Written by: Sam Hamm Short Story by: Dale Bailey “Death
& Suffrage”
Starring:
John Tenney as David Murch Thea Gill as Jane Cleaver Robert Picardo as Kurt Rand
Synopsis: A war is going on that the
public is getting tired of. One of the administrations spin doctors,
David Murch (John Tenney) has a brain fart in the middle of an
interview and wishes that the fallen soldiers could come back and tell
everyone how they feel about the war. In Homecoming
he gets his wish and the next thing you know zombies are all over the
place.
Thoughts: Traditionally horror films have been
used many times as platforms for social commentary. Homecoming
however is nothing more than a liberal, anti-war, propaganda film that
uses zombies like their own personal play things. A lighter tone would
have conveyed the desired message rather well but the depictions of the
controlling administration were so over the top that it was almost
unwatchable. Some may disagree with me but I am used to that.
**Editor’s
note: While decidedly liberal himself, the BHM editor wholeheartedly
agrees with The Zombie Master’s assessment of Homecoming.
Good call Lee.
