Horror is Endangered

Horror is endangered. What does that mean? Simple, when a movie such as 'Shaun of the Dead' is labeled a horror, it's obvious that the real horror of old is in trouble...

Horror movies used to shock people, they used to make you cower with fear and sleep with your light on, now as years go by and directors are constantly filling their pockets rather than wracking their brain for originality, horror movies are full of cheesy cliches, laughable scrips and shoddy acting. it has become the B-Grade genre, much to my sadness and disarray.

The main reason for this I believe is a lack of creativity. Have all the creative ideas been used already? I don't think so, I just think people in the film industry are too lazy to think.

Horror is my favorite genre without a doubt, and I am constantly searching for new titles to add to my collection, but when I go out to buy a DVD now I always check the year it was made. The 1980's, 1970's and earlier are generally your best bet for a good quality horror movie, back in the days when John Carpenter, Sam Raimi, Wes Craven and George Romero were at the top of their game.

To put it simply; when it comes to a superior horror flick, big stars aren't important, realism isn't important and corny twists aren't important. What really matters is; a good story, lots of clever scares (not just loud noises that make you jump) and iconic characters, preferably antagonists. Don't even get me started on the recent trend of people believing a horror movie is only good when it has 10 horrible sequels...

However, hope does lie in recent geniuses such as Neil Marshall and Danny Boyle. Let's all hope that they keep coming up with new, invigorating ideas that will keep horror ALIVE.

Thank You, Sir.

You said it man, screw Shaun of the Dead. When I talk horror movies with people and they bring up that movie. I feel like going Jason Voorhees on them. That movie is stupid.

Dellamorte Dellamore is better, funnier, scarier, weirder and an overall better movie and gets no praise at all.

Let me explain...
by: Jordan

Don,

In your first comment you mentioned your dislike of me saying that horror had now become a B genre, when in fact its roots stem from B, and that is one of the reasons it is about and one of the things that make it unique and enjoyable.

However... to clarify, my point of view is: Horror was never a B genre, it was/is still an A grade genre which possesses lot's of B grade movies, even some fantastic ones such as The Evil Dead. My fear lies in the idea that it is becoming too relaxed now in it's B premise, and it is changing from being A grade with some B material, to B grade with mostly B material.

Every genre has B titles in it, from comedy to drama, but none of those are stereotyped as bad as easily.

And i agree with Pastor of Muppets on the over-abundance of technology horror.

plus, if horror isn't becoming less original and inspired, then why is a movie made in the 1960's still classified by (what i understand) most as being the best horror movie ever, night of the living dead...

I highly appreciate your comments and points of view, and they are definitely things to consider.

Thanks

Yeah, well... your Mother.

LOL - I just read over my previous comment and it indeed sounds a little terse. Sorry about that... I have nothing but LOVE in my heart!

I get your point Master, and maybe you got the brunt of some of my frustration over those that are forever "this sucks!" and "that sucks!". I was on another horror website forum and every single film that anyone brought up was greeted by a barrage of "That one sucks SOOOOO Bad!!!" and it makes me feel a little crazy.

Everything does not suck... some things do. That's my only point.

Oh, and that other horror website? Definitely sucks.

The Movies Speak for Themselves
by: Pastor of Muppets

I certainly didn't say that everything today sucks. In fact, I've been rather vocal in my praise of certain contemporary films. It's also true that there have always been second-rate talents making horror movies. Nothing new in that. But it's the sheer numbers who are active today that bug me. It's very rare that a quality movie of any kind gets made anymore, much less a horror movie. Go look at the list of movies released in 1973 and compare it to this year's list if you think things haven't deteriorated.

But yeah, really my biggest gripe is reserved for the people who are cranking out these endless me-too technology horror movies. It started (I think) with The Ring, which had a pretty stupid premise but beyond that was a decent horror flick. However, it's been all downhill from there as everybody tries to capitalize on what they think attracted people to The Ring, which was NOT the "if you watch this videotape you will die" nonsense.

No offense, but...
by: The Horror Czar

This article, and the following comment, are cynical beyond reason in my opinion.

Better, worse, original, rehashed... it is becoming much too chic to bash the current versions of everything in favor of "the good old days", even horror. It is true that there are many non-original concepts in horror, but it is also true that there are original concepts that spring up now and then... just like always. It is true that there are bad movies made without imagination or skill, but there are also great movies made with a high level of creative thought and talent, just like always.

To try to say that everything today is bad, or everybody today is a moron is taking a cynical view that is very "in vogue" but not very realistic.

In addition to countering the general "everything sucks" sentiment I'll comment on the point that horror has fallen to B movie status... I've got news for you; Horror has always had it's roots in B movies which is part of the strength and part of what allows for original concepts and theatrical risks that otherwise might not have had a chance due to the specter of financial loss. Take the beloved Raimi, for example. Nobody can tell me that The Evil Dead is not a B movie and it is one of my favorite horror flicks of all time.

I'm just saying that the gloom and doom predicted for horror today is, in my humble opinion, unfounded, inaccurate and, unfortunately, common today among those who choose to long for the "good old days" instead of taking what's laid before them with an open mind.

Everything is Endangered When People are Morons
by: Pastor of Muppets

One of the biggest problems, as you suggest, is the mediocrity and lack of talent in the people involved. Standards have been so lowered in our society that everyone and their brother now thinks they have what it takes to be a literary genius. So you have all these half-baked ideas involving what some high school graduate somewhere thinks are deep concepts that actually only make for incredibly stupid movies.

Take "Pulse." Exactly how many horror films based upon our allegedly deep-seated anxiety about digital technology do we need? Answer: none. I guarantee you that no one in this entire world thinks ghosts might spring out of their computer screen and get them, yet some halfwit somewhere thinks this is a great idea for a movie? It's just so ridiculous.
