Horror Movies to Scare a Newbie

I was wondering if there is a horror film that will scare someone who hates horror films. I, myself, love them they are amazing and I am in school now to learn how to make my own. I have seen so many and I have been frightened by more than a few.

I believe in certain things though and I think there is a way to have an open mind to most ideas that horror movies represent but my roommate hates them. She says there is no way that anything like these ideas of ghosts, vampires, werewolves, monsters, aliens, nothing she says they are dumb the acting is always bad and they are never scary. I just want her to see that they can be great and that the acting can be good and to scare the hell out of her.

Is there any movies that you can recommend?
