Horror Short: Man Going Into Hole and Comes Out Insane

What's the late 70's or early 80's trilogy where in one story there's a hole in the ground in Missouri with smoke and deep moans/growls coming from it?
A boy falls into the hole and comes out, but his dog does not. The boy's father gets lowered into the hold to look for the dog and comes out completely insane from whatever he's seen.
