Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers

by Denny
(Dayton, OH, USA)

Just a general question that if someone really possibly knows the answer I would love to hear - but I don't really wanna hear a bunch stories that just sound ridiculous. Anyways...

Freddy Krueger continues to come back to life after he experiences death and I can understand that cause he is not real, he is only in dreams. Jason and Michael are both physical men, and one died by drowning and the other just snapped and popped a screw loose, so what is it about drowning as a boy and becoming insane that gives the power of these 2 to never die and keep coming back?

A Curse!
by: scottyevil

I think it is a curse with both characters. In Friday the 13th when Mrs. Voorhees gets decapitated her blood hits the ground of the camp. Once the blood is shed her dead son Jason is reborn to the earth. I think she cursed the camp for him to kill for revenge of his death. Think about it. Jason died in 1957 so in 1980 that would have made him 34 since he was 12 when he died. So he came back as a child and because of the curse he grew rapidly into the age he should have been. To back me up on this curse watch Jason Goes to Hell and when Stephan walks into the Voorhees house the book of the dead from The Evil Dead is their which could link the movies as does Freddy at the end of the movie. That is also why he is a demon in J.G.T.H cause he is a demon the hole time.

As for Michael Myers, the druids curse him to not die. Halloween 4, 5, and 6 tell of the druids and the doctor all in a cult. The same druids in (to my understanding) Halloween 3 that tried to kill kids and adults with masks.

Answer...
by: Corey 89

The first Halloween's idea was to make Michael appear to be invincible from the perspective of the victim. The film never actually stated he was invincible it just implied that he might be, and left it to the imagination, which was very clever. I see Jason as being a direct copy of the shape that completely misses the point, and then the other Halloween's just jumped on board to go with the trend, so now their desire to kill is greater than life itself, so how can pure evil ever die? I find this very weak compared to John Carpenter's original idea. The original Halloween is king.

Reponse to responses!
by: Denny

Okay, apparently it was a bad idea to think of this as an open-ended question to get some horror movie fans talking.

To the first response: again with what I just said, I have seen every Friday the 13th, every Nightmare on Elm Street and every Halloween including the remakes, and plan to continue.

My whole point was to open up conversation, not be, not to get people down on me if they don't agee with my tastes. After all why would I be on a website called Best Horror Movies if I didn't like horror movies?

And to the Big Lady, I can assure you I've seen and paid attention to every Nightmare on Elm Street film and would likely be able to school anyone on them.

Again just trying to generate discussion, not be a rocket scientiest when it comes to horror films.

My thoughts
by: Anonymous

Hollywood,....Hollywood gives them the power. And God bless them for it! If you try to find logical reasons for their unending lives, then it sucks the fun out of it. Don't over think it, just sit back and enjoy the carnage. JASON RULES!!

And Another Thing!
by: big bad bitch

Freddy only can come back if people think of him thats how he gets his power, you would know this if you watch and paid attention to any of the Elm Street movies. Yes Michael and Jason were both real men but so was Freddy at one point in time, and the reason Michael comes back is because he is deturmed to get the last living family member he has left and then he can rest. The reason that Jason comes back is to get revenge form the ones who killed his mother and to get all the teens who don't follow the rules.

Why vilains don't die
by: Richard

Hello Denny,

By the way Freddy was a real man, a child molester who was killed by the parents of his victims, he comes back to have his revenge on his agressors by killing their children.

Now as to immortality, it's simple ... evil never dies, because if it did what then. I don't know how old you are but same thing with vilains in comic books ... you think they might be dead ... but a few numbers later here there are again.

Same could be said for superheroes, the movie unbreakable with Bruce Willis deals with that.

The Fall of Because.
by: Watchman de profundis

Well, Jason technically isn't "undead" until Part 6. He didn't actually drown in part one, he was alive, scavenging in the forest and searching for his Mommy, I assume. He witnessed his Mother's death at the end of part 1 sparking an unending murder spree. So, in parts 2, 3 and 4 he is actually living and breathing, although seemingly preternaturally powerful. He dies at the end of part 4 "the final chapter" at the hands of Tommy Jarvis and is resurrected in Part 6 at the hands of Tommy Jarvis
a la Frankenstein's Monster. So, if it's good enough for Mary Shelley than why not the film makers behind the unending stream of Friday the 13th movies. So, being undead, he can't die per se.
Michael is a little more complicated. He is not resurrected by the tried and true means of electricity. He just won't die. Now there are alternate story lines in the Halloween cycle with different interpretations of who and what Michael is and that is why of the four epic "slasher" icon's; Freddy, Jason, Michael and Leatherface, I am the most transfixed with Michael (although Leatherface scares me on a more visceral level.) Because, with Michael, there is no clear reason, no absolute why. In a sense he is a representation of the Jungian Shadow. That negative dark, aspect of our psyche that we must grapple with on our journey towards self-actualization or self-destruction. He is the purging fire, that part of us that wants to, needs to destroy. (Though most deny it's within them. All angels, lights, and choirs, right? )
In the end, I doubt this was helpful. Maybe, my explanations sound ridiculous. Probably, because they are. Think about what your asking and what we're talking about. But, may I ask why do you need an explanation? Why do you need an absolute answer? Maybe there is one, maybe there isn't. But, ambiguity leaves room for so much more. If I was given an absolute explanation as to the whats and whys of these movies than I think it would be kind of boring. It would demystify the characters. Plus, why do you think people keep coming back for more after almost 30 years?
The preceding were just my opinions but that is the beauty of the dark fantastic . . . Intellect, reason, rationality are left at the door. Make up your own reasons, suspend disbelief, or just watch something else. Horror and the Dark Fantastic aren't for everyone.
