Jane (Maggie Marion) and Lacy (Becky Boxer) are best friends, and frequent the club circuit in their town looking for hot guys who are not players. Well, Jane is looking for the non-player, and Lacy doesn’t seem to care as long as she gets mouthwash and fresh lipstick after servicing one of her beloved club guys in a back room somewhere. Lacy is the “hot one”, and Jane is the “plain one”, and how they end up together trolling the clubs is a mystery.
At one particular party Lacy makes friends with the party’s promoter and secures VIP access for herself and Jane to the event of the season, a party on a luxury yacht planning to head out to sea and leave the reveler’s cares behind. There’s a problem with this particular yacht though; the previous owner was killed by new husband on the maiden voyage and now she haunts the yacht and disposes of anyone riding on her ship. Uh Oh, this sounds like the makings of a Killer Yacht Party!

Killer Yacht Party has all of the elements of a classic 80s slasher flick, right down to the gritty and somewhat raw production quality which betrays a low budget. The production points just add to the experience, avoiding pitfalls that can ruin a low budget Indie – they seem to be there simply to add to the 80s slasher ambiance. A typical cast of characters inhabits the yacht for this deadly voyage, including the troubled and shy victim, a sassy and back-stabbing friend, a testosterone-infused cocky club promoter (along with his minions) and lots of drama as the shy Jane searches for love in all the wrong places.
What is added to the equation is the quality of the drugs and the graphic nature of the sex, along with an apparent of the Bobo Honk.
Sex and drugs have been necessary components of
Slasher flicks since
the Friday the 13th days, but instead of simply smoking pot the
“sinners” in Killer Yacht Party ingest designer X along coke
from fancy vials (okay, that is SO 90s, but anyway) and the sex is
complete with vicious thrusting and covert oral sex in the storage
room. I’m not being a prude, it is just a sign of the times I suppose…
Mrs. Voorhees happening upon a couple of camp counselors partially
dressed just wouldn’t cut it these days…
The kills in Killer Yacht Party are all good – the gore is not particularly graphic or impressive, but it certainly gets the point across and will certainly appeal to those who can still watch 80s slashers without getting bored. This one might almost make someone’s “Beginner’s Shelf” because it is not particularly scary or graphic, yet still captures the essence of slasher fare.

Killer Yacht Party is fun, entertaining, and recommended. The one qualifier surrounds the severity of the horror and the needs of the audience. For those who prefer sensory overload with their horror or those easily bored by what the old timers consider the classics, this one might just bore you too. Watch this film to see that the slasher formula is alive and well, working on a boat as well as it worked at Camp Crystal Lake.
