Man Melting on Psychedelic Trip

Quite a long time ago I watched a horror movie on TV and I can not for the life of me find a title or description to fit this movie.

All I remember is that this guy (possibly some kind of scientist) goes into the wilderness and comes back to society and creates this huge machine thing that creates an "alternate reality" of sorts. The scene I can best remember in my mind is that guy is going down this hallway and basically starts melting. A women is screaming and running away but she can't escape. During part of this scene when the camera goes back to the melting-man he seems to be having a psychedelic trip happening behind him. Somehow the now blobbed man is defeated and he becomes a puddle.

Can someone please tell me I'm not crazy, and this is a real movie?
