Me, My Cousins and The Ring
by Jack Watson
(Newcastle)
Hello, my name is Jack Watson. I had a strange introduction to horror , mainly because of my cousins' interest in scary stuff. I saw my first 'scary' film when I was 7. My mum and I thought it would be a good idea to watch 'The Others'- not a particularly scary film, but it was for me at that age. I ended up causing a right mess, spilling my fish and chips all over the floor, behind the couch where I was hiding.
My next horror-type film was the Sixth Sense, which I saw when I was about 9. I also saw a lot of horrors at my cousins' house - we were very close when we were little. I saw 'The Haunting', 'Sleepy Hollow', the Japanese original of 'The Grudge' (whats it called, 'Ju-On'?), 'The Breed', 'The Shining', 'Dead Mary', 'The Village', and 'The Number 23', among many others, while staying over there.
Of course, with me being the youngest out of our group, they were always trying to scare me. Like the time we saw Ju-On. The film was playing in my young mind, and of course, it didn't help that my cousin (Jamie) was wandering around making that croaky noise. And when my other cousin (Peter) started saying that Jamie had been dead for 5 years when I asked why his brother was wandering around.
Now, one time, me and Peter had got a movie to watch in his room, while Jamie was going to watch 'The Ring' downstairs. Peter had already seen 'The Ring', and he told me what it was about, and showed me some clips of it on YouTube.
While we were watching our separate films, the phone just happened to ring. So when me and Peter came downstairs, we found Jamie sitting in front of the TV, terrified, thinking that it was Samara on the phone. Let's just say he didn't watch much TV for a while, and avoided answering the phone, for a week after seeing that film...
