Melissa Bacelar, the 27 year old actress originally from New York, has
a knack for horror. A post-production horror movie starring Ms. Bacelar
called Eat
Your Heart Out: A Zombie Love
Story brought her to the attention of Best-Horror-Movies.com
– and I’m glad it did. I arranged with
Melissa’s publicity company for a telephone Interview.
To prepare for the interview with Melissa Bacelar I did a little
research. First I looked at her website, which contains a personal blog
describing unmentionable times with a not-to-be-named action hero in a
limousine, her animal rescue activities and why a woman moving to LA
from the east coast needs to bring her own man. Ok, she’s got
sass.
I next looked through the PICS section of her web site, where there are
lots of shots of Melissa – and I do believe that she is
wearing lingerie in every SINGLE one of them…hmmm.
Finally I looked through her listing on the Internet Movie Database.
Melissa Bacelar has acted in horror (Troma!)
Independent thrillers and the soap opera One Life to Live,
and serves as executive producer on Eat Your Heart Out
via her production company Lost Angeles Films. It appears that there is
quite a career brewing for this Italian/Cuban bombshell.
Melissa Bacelar’s publicist was kind enough to FedEx a copy
of her latest film to me so that I could watch it prior to the
interview. Now I was really intrigued. Melissa plays a
hooker/zombie/cannibal with a decidedly sweet side…huh? Who
is this woman that got her start in horror in the Troma
film Toxic Avenger IV, plays murderous hookers,
wears panties all the time and still makes it a point to rescue bunnies
and puppies she finds on the side of the road every day?
I called Melissa on her cell phone at our appointed time.
“Oh, hi” she said. “I forgot that we had
an interview today, my parents are visiting. When I heard your voice I
thought ‘oh sh**’”. Oh
great…this is going to be rich…
“Do we need to reschedule this?”, I asked.
“Oh no! I’m in the car, and my mom is with me.
Let’s go!” Although I was a little apprehensive,
Melissa Bacelar’s demeanor won me over. So upbeat, so gushing
with enthusiasm. So “perky”.
“I only focus on the positive”, she said,
“I believe that if you spend time focusing on the negative
you only draw more negativity to you”. You had to be there to
really get the fact that she clearly lives this. Melissa’s
enthusiasm and positive energy are infectious.
“OK”, I
thought…”let’s see how this
goes”.
I decided to start with the basics: How did you get into horror?
“Things just really happen to me”, she said.
“My friend Joshua Nelson (also the writer/producer of Eat
Your Heart Out) sent my picture and resume to Troma
without telling me. They called me in and I was like ‘what?
Who are you?”
“Joshua told me to go and meet them wearing the funkiest over
the top outfit I could. I wore vinyl shorts and thigh-high
boots.” Yeah, I thought…that was a hit
I’m sure.
While working with Troma (she played Dr. Hocking's
Nurse in Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV)
Melissa experienced the passion and dedication of the cast and crew
first hand. “They were all sleeping on the floor of this old
building and taking baths in the sink to save money. It was so
cool.”
Melissa Bacelar also had the pleasure of working directly with Lloyd
Kaufman of Troma. “When I tried to draw
on my acting training to prepare for a scene he stopped me and said
‘cold girls in tube tops make good
cinema.’” That really summed it up.
Since that time with Troma Ms. Bacelar has been
busy making movies and attending horror conventions. “I love
conventions. The fans are so passionate…they LOVE
horror!”
I was interested to hear that Melissa Bacelar attended an all-girl
catholic school as a child, and was “asked to
leave”. “Yeah”, said Melissa,
“I didn’t get along with women growing up.
I’m not good at clicks and social circles. And I failed a
couple of subjects too…that contributed to my being kicked
out.”
The Catholic school incident is interesting, I think, because she plays
such a villain in Eat Your Heart Out. How was it to
play a zombie hooker? “I didn’t even have to act in
that role – it was completely comfortable.” Yikes.
“Actually”, Melissa continued, “I play a
sweet girl victim that ‘does the right thing’ in a
new movie I’m working on Pink Eye. That
is really difficult
for me…I’m having challenges with it.”
One of the things that I love about Eat Your Heart Out
is the gore – there are many scenes of Melissa
Bacelar’s character Pandora feasting on human flesh.
“It was really gross”, said Melissa, “I
made sure that I did a good job the first time so that I
wouldn’t have to do the scenes again”.
And now for the Best-Horror-Movies.com exclusive
that I always ask for:
“Well”, said Melissa, “I’m
really open about everything so I don’t know what I can tell
you that nobody already knows”. I do know that BHM is the
FIRST to view the screener for the movie and will have the first
review. Melissa was actually excited to talk to somebody outside of her
production company that has seen it. That’s exclusive!
“Oh, and Jack (Melissa’s costar in Eat
Your Heart Out) was really nice – but he sang show
tunes throughout the shooting.” OK, that’s good
dirt.
On the agenda for Melissa Bacelar in the coming months are more films
by her production company Lost Angeles Films, distribution for Eat
Your Heart Out, a daily webcast called “The Scream
Show” hosted by UHMN.com, more
conventions…and perhaps a marriage.
I say perhaps because while I did learn that Melissa is engaged, she
also said with a laugh, “I’m good at getting
engaged, not so good at getting married.” Time will tell.
After talking with Melissa Bacelar I must admit that I’ve got
a bit of a crush on her. She is beautiful, talented, friendly,
outgoing, caring and ambitious. “The sexy girl that is one of
the guys”, as she puts it. And she is an actress in horror
that feasts on human flesh! Be still, my heart. Questions
