Most Frightening Horror Films

by Harris
(United Kingdom)

Criteria: Watch these films alone, in the early hours of the morning, with the lights out and the surround sound on.

1. The Exorcist (1973)
2. Cannibal Holocaust (1979: uncut)
3. The Changeling (1979)
4. The Amityville Horror (1979)
5. The Orphanage (2008)
6. The Sixth Sense (1999)
7. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
8. The Evil Dead (1982)
9. The Shining (1980)
10. Beyond the Door (1974)

What these films have in common is the ability to implant images and sounds in your mind that are difficult to shake off, especially if you've viewed the film under the above conditions. Horror films should be disturbing and unpleasant!

The main list
by: jamesb

I agree with The Exorcist as first choice. I disagree with other films on the list, especially The Shining, Beyond the Door, The Sixth Sense and Cannibal Holocaust. The Ring, The Grudge, The Dead, shoot... The Creature From the Black Lagoon were all scarier. Also, Cannibal Holocaust is way overblown by so many people. If you are a person who is experienced in hunting and butchering animals, it rates as nothing more than disturbing, but not scary.

Scary?
by: Dave

Well I've been searching for actual scary movies for a while now and it's getting quite frustrating.

Every list I come across, much like this one, lists The Exorcist as Number 1. The Exorcist isn't even remotely scary. Just because it appeared frightening to a 1973 audience which was apperently very susceptible to subliminal messaging doesn't make it scary now, in fact it wasn't even that good of a movie.

Also, why does The Sixth Sense keep appearing on these lists? I wouldn't even classify it as horror let alone frightening, aside from a couple 'jump scares', the movie was downright boring.

I'm getting so tired of all these lists that don't have a single actually scary movie on them.

Anyway, thats my rant.
