Mundo Depravados is a film that depicts the life and times of burlesque show workers who find themselves being stalked by a serial killer, or rather in 1960’s lingo – a sex monster. I’ll say right off the bat - this was a really decent movie.
Long before the creation of When A Stranger Calls, this film opens with an eerie telephone call to one of the working girls from a stranger indicating his desire to do something to her which though unstated, leaves us with chills. For some odd reason, instead of calling the police, the woman proceeds to exit the building and walk alone on the dark city streets. She soon finds herself being followed by the phantom caller who proceeds to stab her with the precision of a stage actor, his identity yet unrevealed.
Enter the slapstick cops. In typical police show fashion, there’s the serious cop and his off the cuff, goof ball partner. These two actually make thefilm. They are bumbling idiots with the comedic timing of ‘Three’s Company’ who show up just after the killer has left the building. Their police work is laughable, but the earnestness with which they pursue the killer is remarkable which helps remind us this is a horror film and not a comedy.
Another charismatic character is Ray Revere, the Jack LaLanne of the film. Ray hosts a television exercise show where the burlesque girls work during the day. There’s something more behind his good looks and charisma…
After following a series of false leads left by the killer, the cops eventually get their man with the help of the queen burlesque diva, Tango, played by Tempest Storm.
Mundo Depravados may very well appeal to the classic horror fan. Although there are many stabbings, there is little blood in the film, which is signature for that time period. The gore phase had not yet caught the fancy of horror film makers. There is also quite a lot of nudity, reminiscent of the ‘free love’ era ushered in in the 60’s and continuing through the 70’s.
One striking thing about the women in the film is their obvious lack of plastic surgery – no implants, no liposuction – and they look good. I sometimes wonder if the Western world will ever undergo a new trend away from the anorexic, airbrushed and perfect back to Au Natural. Maybe I should call Valentino and put the bug in his ear.
