Must See Horror Films

1. Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Entity: Have you ever jumped out of your seat at the movies when the killer jumps out of no where and attacks? That's pretty scary for most people. But what's even scarier is when something in a movie that we can't see drags people out of bed, slames the door, throws things at the walls, all unexpectedly. It's scarier because we can't see it. That is the case with both these films. An evil spirit messes with people's minds, wears them down, makes them more vulnerable and BAM - consumes them. Both movies are shot from the point of view of a hand-held camcorder, which makes them seem real as hell. We start to believe that everything in the film is real and we fall for the characters. When something happens, we're just as afraid as they are. Some people will not be able to get through this movie or sleep that night. If you're looking for a movie to make you jump, shake or maybe even scream, I'd go for one of these.

2. REC and Quarantine: These movies are also shot from the point of view of the hand-held camera. When you watch them, be patient with the first 15-20 minutes which are slow. It gets better. In both films, a journalist follows a fireman in to a building to capture 'a day in the life' of a fireman, and something goes terribly wrong. Some disease (i.e. rabies) has broken out and soon everyone is biting and eating each other. Everyone's trying to escape the building but they aren't allowed out. When watching these movies, I felt like getting out of my chair and running as I waited for someone with rabies to crawl from behind me and try and eat me. Very good films.

No, no no...

I can't seem to agree with your taste of horror films, but hey, it doesn't matter. Paranormal Activity by the way is the worst horror film I've ever seen - bad acting, boring, boring, boring!

Sorry, I am just being honest! Mua ha ha ha ha

My two cents...
by: Watchman De Profundis

I have seen two of the four films you mention. I enjoyed Paranormal Activity but haven't seen the 'mockbuster' Paranormal Entity. I loved the subtlety and build up of the story, thought the main male character annoyed the heck out of me. While I've never encountered an inhuman spirit I'd like to think I wouldn't go out of my way to upset it, especially, when I have rather compelling evidence that it's 'real'. Also, I felt like they really lost it with the ending. Maybe there was just no good way to end the film after all of that tension, stress, and build up but it felt like a cop out to me.

I've seen Quarantine but not the Spanish film it's based upon, REC. Again, I thought there was quite a bit of tension and good build up (twenty minutes isn't a lot of time to spend on exposition. A lot of films sacrifice exposition and jump right into the main conflict and sacrifice the heart of the story in the process). But again I felt the film suffered the most with it's characters. I don't know if one can blame it on casting, script, or direction... my feeling is that it's a little of everything.

Hey, if you enjoy subtlety and build up then by all means check out The House of The Devil (2009). I recently watched it and I have to say it totally renewed my faith in the horror genre. It's been pretty rare recently that I've been so stoked at the end of a film but they really hit the nail with this one.

Take care.

Must See

Sorry dude, I have seen both of these movies and truthfully, they stink. I have not seen such horrorable stuff in years, not to mention the fact that they were so horribly acted. Jennifer Carpenter should stick with doing her charcter Debra on Dexter and never do another horror movie again, and I won't even mention the other one.
