No good horror movies left to watch? Check this out!
by Silverio
This list is for those of you who can't stand seeing The Descent (2006) or Saw (2004) on a top list. If you liked The Last Exorcism (2010), get the heck outta here!
It's not a 'Top List'. I'll just mention the name of some horror movies I really like and make some comments about them.
Let's start with exorcism movies:
1. The Exorcist (1973 Original). To me, it's the horror classic.
2. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005). Also very nice, a must see.
3. The Exorcist: The Beginning (2004). Be careful, it's the one with Stellan SkarsgÄrd. There is another prequel to The Exorcist but it stinks. Anyway...this one is not as good as the others, but still nice.
I'm looking forward for The Rite that's coming out in 2011. Oh, and I strongly advise against watching The Last Exorcism (2010) - probably the worst horror movie I've ever seen.
Now some science fiction:
1. The Thing (1982). Perfect storyline and background.
2. Event Horizon (1997). One of the creepiest movies I've ever seen. It has both horror and a very convincing science background.
3. Alien. Well...just great.
Zombie Movies:
1. Dawn of The Dead (1978) and Dawn of the Dead (2004). The original is more about the way the characters handle the situation, while the remake is more about the bad ass zombies killing everyone. Both are great.
2. Shaun of the Dead (2004). Not horror, but still awesome!
3. Survival of the Dead (2009). Nice idea, but the ending kinda stunk. Worth watching anyway.
4. Rec (2007) and Rec 2 (2009). Both very creepy and in my opinion, way better than the American version.
Well, here you could go for any of Romero's movies. There are so many options. If you're desperate, maybe even 28 Days Later (2002) or Resident Evil (2002). I advise against the whole Return of the Living Dead series. I didn't like Re-Animator (1985) either, but I wouldn't advise against it. Oh, and with so many options, stay away from the indies. I've only had major disappointments with zombie indie movies, so don't waste your time.
Clive Barker:
1. Hellraiser (1987). Classic, real and surreal at the same time.
2. Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988). Not as good as the first one, but why not?
3. Hellraiser: Inferno (2000) and Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002). Not the same kind of movie as the first two, but I found them very interesting in their own way.
Apart from movies mentioned above, I generally dislike Clive Barker and his work. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) and Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996) are horrible, the ones after the 6th are jokes. Candyman (1992)? Well... maybe you should watch it to have your own opinion, but I don't like it. Just watched The Midnight Meat Train (2008) and wasn't very fond of it either. I'm going to watch Book of Blood (2009) one of these days, but I don't have my hopes high.
Stephen King:
1. Storm of The Century (1999). One of my favorite horror movies.
2. Salem's Lot (2004). Also one of my favorite horror movies.
3. The Shining (1997 TV mini series). No, I don't like Kubrick's version. The mini series is way better in every aspect I can think of. Alright... there's no Jack Nicholson. But Steven Webber did a hell of a good job as John Daniel 'Jack' Torrance.
4. Children of the Corn (1984). Great actors, great movie.
5. Thinner (1996). Great story and ending.
Stephen King, to me, is the extreme opposite of Clive Barker. Almost any SK movie is good. There are only a couple of exceptions I can think of: Riding the Bullet (2004) and The Body aka Stand by Me (1986). I could spend the whole day mentioning movies like IT, Cujo, Misery, Shawshank Redemption, etc., but I won't. Just get any SK movie and you're almost sure to have fun.
Oh, a last suggestion: Sometimes They Come Back... For More (1998). I know, the first two movies stink. Still, this one has absolutely nothing to do with them, and it kicks ass!
Others:
1. The Evil Dead series. Maybe the best trilogy ever, a must see.
2. The Omen (1976). Definitely one of the best.
3. Vampires (1998) by John Carpenter. Let James Woods show you how it's done! No lame sentimental vampires here!
4. The Night Flyer (1997). I know, I know, it's by SK. Whatever, it's awesome!
5. The Amityville Horror (1975). Great movie. Just don't make the mistake of watching all 10 or 11 movies. Most of them stink big time!
6. Crawlspace (1986). No comments, ha ha.
Well that's all that comes to mind right now. I know I missed hundreds of good horror films. Maybe even some of the best. The purpose of this list is just to give you some ideas.
My philosophy about horror movies:
I think what makes a good movie is the storyline and the characters, instead of special effects or gross stuff. I'm not saying special effects etc. are not nice, I'm just saying a movie should not revolve around that. That's the reason why I don't like many recent movies.
Same with old ones. I like a lot of them, but because they're good, not because some people consider them 'classics'. So what if Rosemary's Baby (1968) is considered a classic? I still wouldn't watch it twice.
