The Second Season of the Masters of
Horror series on Showtime combines top horror writers and
directors together for a second year creating some incredible (and some
not so incredible) one-hour features. Pelts, the
sixth episode,
demonstrates Argento's genius yet again.

Original
air date:
December 1, 2006 Directed by: Dario Argento Written by: Matt Venne Short story by: F. Paul Wilson
Starring:
Meat Loaf as Jake Feldman John Saxon as Jeb Jameson Ellen Ewusie as Shana
Synopsis: Jake Feldman (Meat Loaf) is an
independent manufacturer of fur coats. He is also a sleaze-ball who
treats his workers bad and spends his money on strippers. Jeb Jameson
(John Saxon) is a trapper who has snuck onto private property to trap
raccoons. These are special raccoons though. Their pelts are perfect,
no blemishes to be found. He makes a deal for Jake to come and look at
the pelts with an option to buy them. Before Jake can make it out to
Jeb’s however, Jeb’s son decides to bash in
Jeb’s head and then take a steel trap to his own face. It
seems that there might be a curse on the raccoon pelts.
Thoughts: Watching Pelts is a
great answer to the question of why Dario Argento is on the list of
best horror directors of all time. His use of lighting, angles, and
editing skills are to be envied. He is a master of his craft and he
unremorsefully proves it with Pelts. The visual
effects are fantastic and it gives you an idea of how Argento would
have done his earlier work had he had the ability to pull it off. For
you people out there that have to have your gore fix, Pelts
will more than suffice. As a matter of fact (warning: soapbox material
to follow), I was surprised that they let Pelts on
the air, what with Showtime banning Imprint and
all. Pelts is an excellent episode and Argento
continues to show that he is truly a master of horror.
