Thanks Nick for putting up the query in the first place! I too have been wondering how/where to find the movie.

I saw it once ages ago - I particularly remember the little speech at the end - and the '80s soundtrack. But with a C list cast it was very difficult to find - and this movie is not listed on most lists of Sci Fi movies (not even on Wikipedia).

Anyway today after years of wondering (I'm sure I didn't imagine the movie) I searched on Google for "80s movie people on a plane swapped for.." and followed the links till I found this.

Now I know the title - so will search for where to buy "The Annihilator (1986)"

Hi,

While you`re trying to find a decent copy of the movie you can at least refresh your memory of it.
Take a look at YouTube, the whole movie is there.

Would have been a good series, shame they canned it after the pilot.

Fingers crossed someone will pick it up again.

Hey Greg, thanks man. You are the best. Posted this ad years and years ago and no one was able to help me out. Yesterday I decided to check the ad once again, and I was surprised, extremely surprised that someone was able to let me know the name of this movie. Now I'm looking to buy - it appears to be a very rare title very difficult to find, but at least I have the name now and can go deeper into it. Once again thank you very much for your help. Hi. Your movie is Annihilator (1986) (TV). It was a pilot movie for a possible series that never took off. I remember it most for the 'Ashes to Ashes' Bowie music sequence, when the guy's just found out his fiancee is a robot and he crushes her with his car against a tree after she tries to kill him. The general plot is that a flight disappears for a minute, and then all passengers that were awake are replaced by robots.
They then hunt down and kill all that may be aware of them. Thankfully, some turn out to be on our side.

Great film.

The only movie I can think of with people missing on a plane while the passengers slept is The Langoliers.
