Why good SK books often fail on the big screen
by: V pascal

You really need to read the book to understand Louis Creed's motivation. The difficulty with making SK books into film is that so much of the internal dialogue and shades of psychological motivation are lost in the movie.

Entire subplots are left out that add essential material we need to understand actions of the various characters.

I've been listening to the audiobook narration of this novel for months now and it is utterly amazing how a SK novel transforms into a living image by dint of a talented narrator. I recommend it for many of his novels. There is a real art to it.

The frightening aspect of a good SK novel, like this one occurs in gems and fragments of essays contained within the book that add punch and meaning to the physical events transpiring before the reader.

Realistic in many ways
by: Anonymous

Pet Semetary is one of the most frightening films I've ever witnessed. As a child of 10 having seen the film for the first time, the sight of Victor Pascow laying in the hospital bed and awakening haunted me for months. To this day, I can't watch this film with the lights off and I've seen just about every horror film before and after. The film has dream-like qualities while operating on a level of realism unseen in today's horror. The child being run over by the semi, Victor the candy striper, and Indian burial grounds. The only gripe I have with the film is the stupidity of the film's main protagonist, Louis, unwisely choosing to reanimate his cat, son, and wife. That's where the reality ends for me. Otherwise, it could be considered nearly perfect.

One of my faves
by: Tapgirl

I read the book thinking 'oh this won't be scary at all' and I didn't sleep for two weeks. Then I foolishly allowed myself to watch the film, thinking I'd be okay, having read the book...another two weeks of sleeping with the light on. The kid disturbed the heck out of me, from when he is killed by the truck (which to me is where the true horror of this story lies) to the scalpel wielding 'Mommy I've got something for you...'
Still one of my favorite horror books and films.

Nailed it

Hey Tom,

Your assessment of Pet Sematary is right in line with my own feelings - from my perspective you nailed it.

Disturbing and twisted, while still having that Stephen King feeling that it just may be made for TV... until the wacked things start happening.

I have a neighbor that has a little kid much like little Gage, and neither one of them are allowed to come over anymore...
