The Masters of Horror series
on Showtime brings the top horror writers and directors together for a
series of incredible one-hour features. The eleventh episode, Pick
Me Up directed by
Larry Cohen has such a cool story that it is a shame it wasn't on a big
movie screen.

Original
air date: January 20, 2006 Directed by: Larry Cohen Written by: David J. Schow Short Story by: David J. Schow
Starring:
Fairuza Balk as Stacia Warren Kole as Walker Michael Moriarty as Jim Wheeler
Synopsis: A busload of travelers gets
stranded in the middle of no where when the bus breaks down. Stacia
(Fairuza Balk) decides to walk to a motel about 12 miles one direction.
Another group decides to hitch a ride with a truck driver, Jim (Michael
Moriarty) that is willing to take them to a truck stop about 20 miles
in the other direction. The remaining travelers meet a traveling
cowboy, Walker (Warren Kole) that happens upon them. Pick Me
Up seems harmless until you discover that the cowboy and the
trucker are competing serial killers.
Thoughts: Pick Me Up has such
a cool concept for a story that it is almost sad that it
couldn’t have been a big screen movie. Two serial killers who
compete with each other over who kills who first? Fantastic! Larry
Cohen (It’s Alive, Black Caesar,
etc.) has actually written more than he has directed but he shows his
talents in Pick Me Up. I also wish Fairuza Balk
would do more work because I think she is one of the most underrated
actresses out there and her work here just continues to prove it.
